So I’ve been getting bombarded with dr squatch ads lately. Talk to me about good soap effects on your skin vs the body washes?? I use good shave soap but I know nothing about body soaps and what’s available

Dr Squatch looks like good soap, but it's pretty pricey and looks a little small for $7. The only thing I'm skeptical about is that it does not seem to include any chelators, so it's going to be affected strongly by hard water. You can probably find a local source for about $5/bar for good stuff.

As for body effects, I never got into the science of that. I just prefer the way soap feels. I haven't made any since the baby was born and I've been using commodity Safeguard or the like.

If you have very hard water, you might not want to use soap, though.

I bought a bar of Dr. Squatch at the hardware store.  The flavor was PINE TAR or something.  It has little bits if oatmeal or something in it which will eventually end up in my eye, probably.  I too thought it was pricey for the size of the bar.  I also smell like I just got out of a hot tub filled with Pine-Sol.  My skin feels pretty good after the shower but I don't know that I would buy this stuff again.  That said, I have purchased THIS STUFF and I really like it. But that one is even pricier (Squatch is $7 for 5 ounces, this one is $8 for 4.3 ounces but I feel like the bar lasts longer). George, is there an advantage to pricey soap as opposed to just using Dove, Irish Spring or Dial?

My wife makes body wash because she is dissatisfied with all commercial products for one reason or another. Whatever she puts in there, it's good stuff, I don't end up itchy or smell weird so I'm happy.

I heard you smell weird.  That's the word on the street anyway.

I have hard water, what should I be washing with?

Up to about 10 grains of hardness soap with chelators will rinse clean. Above that hardness of without chelators soap will leave scum on your skin that you can feel. In those cases, detergents are better, as long as it's one of the gentler ones.

I also think putting solids in body soap is a major mistake.

I use the Buffalo Trace soap from Duke Cannon.

Irish Spring.  It's either that or a dust bath with the chickens.

There are all kinds of face washes with granules (sand?) in them and soaps with chunks of shit in it.  Not sure where this came from to be honest.  If I look closely at this Squatch I can see a whole oat or something.  I had a conversation with our eye doctor about it and he said those products can be dangerous.  Earlier this week I had something in my eye that I could not get out and I thought for sure it was from this soap.  It was really irritating and I eventually went to the treatment center.  The doctor found an eyelash in my eye.  An eyelash!  It felt like a piece of Cap'n Crunch was in there!   I can only imagine what an OAT would feel like.  Yes, my eyes are closed tightly when I wash my face but you never know.

Yeah, it's bullshit. Pumice or something in hand soap - where you're scrubbing with the bar - is useful. Body soap doesn't need that kind of shit, and it's downright dangerous for face soap. I blame the farmer's markets, where people started putting flowers and shit in soap that was never going to be actually used for "curb appeal".

Yep, cheap-ass Irish Spring.  Works as shampoo too.
