The youngest wanted me to get a game that we can play together, so we bought The Forest. It's $9 on Steam.

It's survival 'horror' starting with s plane crash in a remote area filled with psycho cannibals. You find food and water, make shelter and fire, scavenger weapons and armor, and build defenses to fight off the cannibals. There's a storyline, too, but we haven't done anything with that yet.

First person, single and up to 4 players co-op. It's a good time of you're into the genre.

Oh, and the 'horror' aspect, isn't. It's a little bit creepy and has some jump-scares, but I wouldn't call it horror at all.

I played it for a few days. Managed to build a cabin and a nice kill zone to deal with the cannibals. But, i found i empathized too much with their way of life. So i put it down.

I play a game called The Trees, so I just can't see playing The Forest.

If you enjoy this you should check out Subnautica. Entirely different but with many of the same mechanics in terms of gathering and crafting and survival.

Not so. They're working on a sequel now.

I've been playing this again lately because the sequel, Sons Of The Forest, has been in the gaming media since it just came out (as Early Access) on Steam.

I'm waiting until it's farther along before I try it but seeing all the articles made we want to play through the first one again which I have been doing the past week or so.

This (along with Subnautica mentioned above) is one of a very few games that almost gives me panic attacks... But in a good way. Running through the forest at night searching for the last stick you need to build a shelter while creepy mutants are roaring and chasing you, OMFG.
