Anyone still playing board games or the like? Seems this is mostly video games.
Wife and I used to play board games a lot, 2-3 nights a week, not as much time now with young kids and careers.
Mostly we have a few good, vetted games that play out pretty shortly.
We play, regularly:
Battleline: https://www.amazon.c...96082592&sr=8-2 (kind of an extra gussied up card game with a theme that works pretty well for this type of game. Aside from the first few moves, pretty much every decision is agonizing).
Hive: https://www.amazon.c...96082729&sr=8-4 (basically a simplified chess-type game where you create your own board. The theme actually works here. You use various types of insects to try to surround your opponent's queen piece. Heavy bakelite tiles. We have the full size version but I would buy the "travel" version, which is still nice and more than big enough, and contains the expansions.
Coloretto: https://www.amazon.c...96082867&sr=8-2 Still evaluating as a 2 person game. I think I like it. I actually bought it because I remember when I was part of a gaming group someone's 6-7 year old kids were playing this, and was hoping my bright 3 year old might catch on, but no.
We play Carcassone (I assume everyone knows this) occasionally when we have more time. That's usually 45 minutes or. so. We also sometimes play Dominion but sometimes feels a bit like "2 person solitaire" and not very thematic. Not my favorite, despite its popularity.
We really like the Catan card game for 2 players. That's an old one. I can't find that to link to; I think it's out of print (there are several newer games which are not the same thing). It's a 2 hour deal and rarely have time for that.
In the ultimate admission of nerdery, we bought Twilight Struggle a few years ago and have managed to read the rules a few times. We may not get around to actually playing that until we retire. https://www.amazon.c...96083319&sr=8-1
Hope someone finds something interesting on this list. Any recommendations for 2 player games (besides sex) we should try?
Looking forward to the kids getting old enough to play board games. I think we have 30+ games, and that's with only buying a couple in the past 5 years.
