Anyone still playing board games or the like? Seems this is mostly video games.

Wife and I used to play board games a lot, 2-3 nights a week, not as much time now with young kids and careers.

Mostly we have a few good, vetted games that play out pretty shortly.

We play, regularly:

Battleline: https://www.amazon.c...96082592&sr=8-2 (kind of an extra gussied up card game with a theme that works pretty well for this type of game. Aside from the first few moves, pretty much every decision is agonizing).

Hive: https://www.amazon.c...96082729&sr=8-4 (basically a simplified chess-type game where you create your own board. The theme actually works here. You use various types of insects to try to surround your opponent's queen piece. Heavy bakelite tiles. We have the full size version but I would buy the "travel" version, which is still nice and more than big enough, and contains the expansions.

Coloretto: https://www.amazon.c...96082867&sr=8-2 Still evaluating as a 2 person game. I think I like it. I actually bought it because I remember when I was part of a gaming group someone's 6-7 year old kids were playing this, and was hoping my bright 3 year old might catch on, but no.

We play Carcassone (I assume everyone knows this) occasionally when we have more time. That's usually 45 minutes or. so. We also sometimes play Dominion but sometimes feels a bit like "2 person solitaire" and not very thematic. Not my favorite, despite its popularity.

We really like the Catan card game for 2 players. That's an old one. I can't find that to link to; I think it's out of print (there are several newer games which are not the same thing). It's a 2 hour deal and rarely have time for that.

In the ultimate admission of nerdery, we bought Twilight Struggle a few years ago and have managed to read the rules a few times. We may not get around to actually playing that until we retire. https://www.amazon.c...96083319&sr=8-1

Hope someone finds something interesting on this list. Any recommendations for 2 player games (besides sex) we should try?

Looking forward to the kids getting old enough to play board games. I think we have 30+ games, and that's with only buying a couple in the past 5 years.

Gloomhaven weekly with my brother and sister, currently on pause until covid goes away.  Jaws of the Lion has been purchased.  We're committed to the top tier kickstarter of Frosthaven, so we'll rock that as soon as it ships.

Kingdom Death with my son until he got douchey.  Will probably pick it up again solo after he goes to college.

Love Letter and Shadows Over Camelot with the girls.  About to kick off Love Letter shortly, actually.  I don't think I've ever seen a game with so few elements to it that has such deep strategy.  I'm totally impressed.

2 player: Head to head 2 player versions of multiplayer games generally suck.  Co-op is generally much better.

We've got a crapload of games in the closet.  The son is the only one that wants to play really deep games with me, but he's not so sociable these days.

I get together with a couple of high school friends about 3 times a year to board game.  They still think they are in high school, while I'm a couple decades past that.  It's more weird than fun.

Some titles to check out, thanks. I just realized that nothing I posted was actually a board game, all card or tile games, ha.

Just played a new game on vacation called Wingspan that is awesome.  There are a lot of ways to score points and you can't really tell who is winning until you add everything up at the end, which I think makes things more fun.

Seconding Gloomhaven - it's fun as well.

Pandemic - there are a million versions but I gotta call out the Legacy versions that play like an ongoing campaign: https://www.amazon.c...96304621&sr=8-5

Puerto Rico: such a challenging game, definitely not for everyone:  https://www.amazon.c...96304559&sr=8-2

Terraforming Mars:  https://www.amazon.c...6304559&sr=8-44

Dominion:  https://www.amazon.c...,aps,201&sr=8-1

Once in a blue moon. Trivial Pursuit or monopoly if my wife has the balls to challenge me. I love Monopoly

we just discovered shrieks and creaks in the back of our closet so we are going to play it with the kids tonight.  I found an old walkman that still works well enough to play the cassette tape.  this should be fun.  it kind of makes me wonder if there is a web based version of this game that could be played on a laptop or tablet.

Exploding kittens and bears vs babies are pretty good card games
