This year is kid pitch so, for me, it consists of sitting out in sweltering heat for 2+ hours and watching kids walk the bases loaded every inning.

I went through several years of this. I sucked at baseball as a kid, but I helped coach when my son played. It made it way more bearable, even just being a first base coach at games. Now my son discovered Disc Golf, and life is better.

I'm thinking about coaching, actually. Sitting here watching is excruciating.

I've been there for soccer but I don't know if it'd actually be better.

Keeping yourself engaged helps because you don't just sit there bored and frustrated. Pay attention, because you can actually see the improvement the kids make during the season. It's great to see.

That's one of my only concerns, but it's super prevalent for kayakers also. It's usually me or my BIL taking him, so we can control things for now.

My dad was never athletic. I don't think he ever played any sports. My mom played varsity basketball, but we didn't play that, so neither of them felt comfortable assistant coaching or anything. I don't know how they managed to attend like every single game/meet my brother and I took part in. Worst part was probably 10 straight years of swim meets - God that would have been boring.

That's a lot of sloppy joes in the natatorium.  :P

What’s the parent culture like in the league? I’d be worried about the hassle of a bunch of overcommitted parents thinking their kid is the next Cal Ripken

That's the level they start most new umpires, I still have nightmares of those first months.

Yeah, parents can ruin the experience for the coaches and the kids. One of the coaches in my son's league has a policy of the parents drop the kids off for practice and leave, pick them up after practice is over. He tells parents that if they don't like it, they can try to get on another team.

Seems like a great way to nip the parent issue in the bud.

It's pretty chill.  I haven't seen any parent issues.

We have a baseball complex down the road that they have lots of travel team tourneys at. Judging by the amount of partying going on at surrounding hotels, the parents seem to be enjoying the nonbaseball hours pretty much :)

It's kind of lame how they've stacked a couple of teams in this league. There's 3 teams that are head and shoulders above everyone else.

This team has three kids that can get the ball out to the fence. Our kids can barely get the bat on the ball, getting it to the outfield grass on the fly is an event.

Check that. 4 kids.

yeah, I hate that. There are a couple of coaches that basically get to pick their whole team before others. There shouldn't be that big of a difference in youth sports.

Can't you drink during these things? Also, get some side action going. Someone's gotta be organizing the bets.

Youth sports betting is an untapped gold mine.  I like this.
