My brother has an old xp machine he wants to use for whatever reason. To make this happen, ideally we'd format the hard discs and do a fresh install. The computer probably has the old xp serial number, but I dont think it has any boot discs or other restore software.

Ideas?

I tried to shut this whole enterprise down from the getgo, but my brother is mentally ill and fixates on nonesense.  Eventually, his caregiver (my dad) gets tired of listening to it and then I get tired of listening to him bitch about it. So, we set up the box, my brother does some stupid shit, gets ####ed, and we throw it all in the garbage. The cycle then starts over again.

I'll disable the networking devices, but 5 minutes after him sitting down with it i'll get a call. "He can't get on the internet."

Sure. I forget the name of the big zero day back about 3 years ago, but it targeted issues on XP/2003. I'm sure that exploit is still part of a hacker's toolkit, just to get the low hanging fruit.

Our IT is annoyed by the three XP machines I maintain at work. They run software that controls microscopes and the cost of upgrading the software isn't in the budget
Every year they come around asking if we can get rid of them. Every year I say nope.

I need it to run proprietary software for my practice.  I can't fool Win 10 into getting it to function very well. And I'm not about to drop six figures on new software at this point.  Those machines stay off the internet

Looks like the links to xp downloads are expired. The topic starter in the discussion eventually found an old xp disc and managed to get things going that way. Still searching for another path.

Since we are talking about mental illness I know reason isn't going to work here. Does it have to be this machine? Does he really just want win XP? Maybe there is an XP emulator out there that is safer.

For the peace of mind, I'd just buy him a new bare bones desktop and be done with it. Even the base models should perform better than whatever he had that ran XP.

Mental illness, brah. He focuses on things that are difficult to obtain.

"I want a VHS to watch my dvds"

"You can't do tha..."

*screams for 10 years, attempts suicide etc etc*

So we eventually buy the hardware to record DVDs onto VHS tapes and let him watch that grainy shitshow. The response is, "That sucked." And it's onto the next thing.

The XP thing is fairly tame, but i don't want to spend more time or engery on it than i have to. I want a path and a slow drip execution that will delay the next shitshow.

Tell him there is only one file available on the internet and it's hosted on a really old server. Figure out how to slow the download to 2400bps.

Problem delayed for 5 months.

that would probably work with most people but remember we are dealing with a person with mental illness that also shares DNA with Vagus.  think about that for a minute....
