I'm about out of my iodine solution, and at the pharmacy today they have a povidone-iodine solution, can this be used to sterilize my equipment and bottles? or order the brewery iodine?

That's exactly what I use. It's a far stronger solution than B-T-F. Mine is a solution sold for veterinary use, but it works just fine.

It's not scientific! I just go by eye - I look for a vivid orange color. Once it's that dark I know it's strong enough. The good thing is that strength isn't terribly critical - as long as you have at least some amber color in the solution, it's probably still effective. I just tend to err on the side of caution. I've never had any noticeable iodine presence in any of my beers, including a fair number of very delicate pilsners.

I use iodine also, at a rate of 3 ml per gallon of water. I think that brings you to about 12.5 ppm which is a minimum recommended amount IIRC
