With all the big municipal shows cancelled this year, people seem to have taken matters into their own hands.

There's a crazy amount of stuff going off around me. A crazy amount of thick smoke is hanging in the air.

And some of the stuff I'm hearing is decidedly of the illegal variety!

The mortars are really bordering on the illegal stuff now, it’s really good. Personally I’m glad this is the case with everyone doing it themselves

Seriously. I’m in Longmont for the weekend. It sounds like 1864 Gettysburg.

It’s been going for hours here with big stuff. They are illegal and they have had those electronic signs for a month reminding, etc. Seems like it’s a known thing in this area to do so, at least we got rain this afternoon to avoid fires.

They are mostly legal here (although I heard some that I'm sure were illegal anywhere!)

Fortunately, they seem to have pretty much ended at midnight, which is the legal limit.

They are also allowed one more day, tomorrow until midnight.

It's been nuts here the last couple of days. "Safe and sane" are still legal here, which blows my mind after the wild fire dander here in sonoma county, ca.

The city has been plastering all over Facebook and emails that they have a zero tolerance for illegal fireworks, but as usual it isn't being enforced.

How much do people spend on this shit anyway?

I've never really understood the appeal of buying a bunch of small-time fireworks. I really enjoy a well done professional fireworks show but have no desire to light a bunch myself. Growing up, we did our own "show" as we lived in BFE and weren't going to drive into the city just to watch fireworks. I know my parents spent a lot of money but the results were never that great. I enjoyed lighting them for a few minutes, I suppose, but after that it was just tedious.

It was a lot last night, but it’s been like this every night for a couple of months. All night long. Doesn’t bother me because the AC and fan drown it out. Nextdoor is going crazy about it tho

We were at a friend's house last night. He spent over $500 on fireworks that are set off remotely to music you select.

We celebrated with Thunderstruck by AC/DC.

That’s pretty cool!

Often we are at my friend’s family’s property for the Fourth. His brother is a career Army guy and a bit of a pyromaniac with a penchant for explosives. A few years back he spent $10k for the fireworks display. I felt bad chipping in only $50 lol

Especially since I got to light off a massive display using incendiary ammunition
