My daughter had a laptop about two years ago - HP ProBook 6475b - that she replaced with a high power gaming laptop.

My wife wanted to use it to run some old games, so I wiped it and restored the original build from the recovery partition.

It's totally FUBAR.

The first time she logged in as her MS user and it didn't work, so I wiped and reinstalled again and created a local user.  Still doesn't work.

The problem is that it won't open anything.  Edge starts to open then closes.  Win10 settings won't open at all.  The tiles on the start menu are empty.  It's like the whole Win10 UI overlay isn't working.  I think it's trying to download updates, but isn't succeeding.

I tried stopping restarting the Windows Update Service and that didn't fix it.

Any ideas?

what does it do if you open it in  safe mode?

if it will open in safe mode, try running system file checker.

from google:

  1. Click the Windows-button → Power.
  2. Hold down the shift key and click Restart.
  3. Click the option Troubleshoot and then Advanced options.
  4. Go to “Advanced options” and click Start-up Settings.
  5. Under “Start-up Settings” click Restart.
  6. Various boot options are displayed. ...
  7. Windows 10 starts in Safe Mode.

I'm guessing some of the win10 machines i bought weren't loaded with the bloated ms crap.  I'm probably way wrong since I waited until a few months ago to switch

What old games? I boot lakka from a USB drive but it can run as an OS.

If it isn't for work (VPN, Cisco etc might not work on Linux, plus ms office issues) ditch windows and go Linux. We have 5 laptops: wife win10, son1 Ubuntu, son2 Lubuntu and I have 2 laptops one win10 and the other Ubuntu. The Linux machines are just as good if you don't need MSoffice. Some of the software feels dated (Ubuntu feels win xp era) but it works

For os and desktop try arch with kde plasma. Its freaking amazing. For office equivalent gotta check out Libre office or OpenOffice. Libre is awesome!

She wants to play stuff like Zoo Tycoon, the Sims (3), and some kind of amusement park game that's also 10 years old.

If it were me I'd suspect a bad recovery partition. I'd format the HD and use a bootable USB stick to install an entirely fresh version of Windows.

If that doesn't fix it then IMO you have hardware issues.

old games might run better in Linux via WINE. You can pick the era of windows you are simulating

I haven't messed with it since then, I have other projects of higher priority.  But I will and will get back to you all.
