suggest me something that I can hook my cordless drill up to and won't require any setup on my part.  buy it, put it on a bucket, mill grain.

 

so fucking pissed right now.

I managed to get through the last few pounds but I had to keep giving the mill the old reach around.  (reach underneath and get the free roller starter while running the drill).  I'm not sure I want to risk losing a finger to make beer so my original request still stands.

 

you guys know i'm a cheap bastard but I also want my brew days to go smoothly.

I've had a Millars Mill for years and it's never given me any issue.

Had the same issue myself a while back. Solved it by totally disassembling, cleaning, and lubricating the bearing surfaces.

What's weird is it doesn't feel like the free wheel is that hard to move. Maybe my rollers are too worn? I have had this thing for over ten years.

the knurls could just be too flattened, but I'd clean and lube the bearing surfaces first

Yes, there are myriad instructions out there to do it, also a tip i read is to add an o-ring to the free roller when you reassemble, as a driver.

it comes with one of those but it almost immediately gets shredded and ends up in your mash.

 

so I took the hopper off.  side screws or bottom bolts next?

I would unbolt it from the piece of wood then take it apart.

yeah, that's what I ended up doing.  so here is where it's at now:

 

so what should I be cleaning?  where should I be applying lube and what kind of lube?  also should I take this opportunity to flip the free roller end for end?  I've made sure to keep it in the OG orientation just case I want to do this.

I guess it looks like if just lube the ends of the adjusters that go into the roller but with what kind of lube? And is there any special cleaning procedure? I can try to remove as much crud as I can with a qtip or something.

I use vegetable oil on my C&S 2A. Clean off all the gunk you can then put a drop or two on the shafts when you slide then into the bushings. Clean the ends of the rollers rollers too.

FWIW the last time I had this issue I opened the gap a little and it started grabbing grain better.

okay, I cleaned, put some corn on there (b/c that's what I had) and reset the gap to stock (which requires one side to be slightly off stock to get it to look even???).  I'll just make sure on my next batch to try milling my grain at least a day ahead before I do any other prep.  if this doesn't work I'll try opening it up a little and if that doesn't work I buy a new mill.

This was exactly my plan too. I was all ready to pull the trigger on a sweet 3 roller monster mill when the damn bc started working again after cleaning it. That was 2 years ago. Pissed me off.

I will say that it was a lot simpler in there than I expected.  I guess I don't know what I expected.

If the BC is like the MM then you don't want to lubricate it, the brass sleeve bearing is "self-lubricating".  Lubricant won't hurt the operation but it will probably make it gum up even faster because the grain powder will stick to the lubricant and make thick/non-lubricating.  Just cleaning it should solve the problem.
