My Barley Crusher has been a true friend for over 110 batches. Never had to mess with the settings. So today I’m set to grind 11# of TF Pale malt and the stuff is slipping through mostly uncrushed. Smaller kernels? Maybe? My settings are spot on .039. So I reluctantly set a smaller setting and Did a double crush. I ended up with a scary fine grain mix. I have an IPA on deck tomorrow. Estimated gravity 1.063. Curious to see what happens.

you got rice hulls just in case?  I have some from years ago just for this kind of situation.

If you BIAB I think you will be fine.  I think Denny is the one that says "crush it till you are scared" or something like that.

I do have rice hulls on hand and but I also do BIAB, so I'm going to give it a go w/o them. I have nothing but time today.....  :)

Yea, Denny always says this hahah.  If I pick up any efficiency points, I'd consider double grinds going forward.  It's funny.  I spend much time thinking about ways to ease the brew day, saving steps, planning out all the ingredients and water ahead of time etc.  Try to keep the actual day a little shorter.  So now I'd be adding back 20-30 minutes.  But if it works then I guess it's worth it.  Damn you 'Gambrinus' damn you hahaha

I use a BC too, and my old one (ca. 2006) got to where I needed to set the rollers a little wider than I wanted, crush once on a normal speed, then run the grain thru again at a higher speed, to make sure everything got crushed.

The rollers were the issue; they weren't squared off enough on the ends, so when I'd use the mill, there'd be excess friction between the rollers and the mill body, and any hangup in the grain would make the mill seize up tight.

Highly.  Annoying.

My current BC runs like a top, and I've got the mill gap set narrow enough that 1 pass thru gets a nice crush, but if I'm using grains with smaller kernels, or for some reason stuff appears to get thru without being crushed, sending everything back thru for a 2nd crush at higher speed takes another minute or 2 at the most.

^^ interesting regarding the older rollers.  If I set anywhere less than .039 I get hang ups.  Plus this Fawcett Spring malt is definitely smaller.

I just mashed in and since Mando planted the seed (hull actually), I tossed in a large handful of rice hulls :)  Gonna do a two hour mash.

Been double milling with my old Valley Mill for some time now. First to crack the hull, then to turn it into dust.

Great extraction and no stuck sparges.

Welp, the double crush did nothing more than ensure I hit my target; 1.063. I will do it next batch and tighten the gap even more next time.

Looking for ways to save time on brew day and you’re doing a two hour mash? Does not compute lol
