Yea, just a 'touch' too much whirlfloc. :spray:

Remember the days we brewed with Irish Moss. I swear I could taste that! I was a bit skeptical on my first use of Whirfloc. But now I really like the stuff. My pro brewer friend is using something else now that he claims is better than Whirlfloc. Sorry, I can't remember the product name.

Brewbrite?

I will be giving Whirlfoc G and Polycar 10 (PVPP) a try tomorrow.

I use a pill splitter and put half a tablet in for 6 gal batches. When brewing using my keggles, I do the whole tab. When I drop a whole tablet into a 6 gal batch, I get more trub and I think a slight seaweed taste. But that all could be by suggestion. Although I haven't noticed any a difference in head retention or body, Denny is most likely correct on those points. I remember a BN podcast where JP threw in the powder remaining in a bag of Whirlfloc. IIRC he said it was easily 10 tablets worth. The seaweed taste in the beer was overpowering. If you have plenty of Whirlfloc and don't see any consequences, I don't see a reason to bother cutting a tablet in half. Go for it.

I did something that apparently no one had thought of before I did it 8-10 years ago...I actually contacted the company and got info from the source, rather than internet guessing.  :)

That's excellent but you wonder why the tablet would be created for a 10-gallon batch when [I would assume] the vast majority of homebrewers make 5 gallon batches.  Also, many outlets buy it in bulk and repackage it and either include incorrect instructions (1 tablet per 5 gallons of beer) or NO instructions.  Why not make the tablet smaller for 5 gallons and if you brew 10 gallons, use two?  Seems counter-intuitive to me.

I assume it was originally designed for commercial breweries and just adopted on the home brew side.  So what they had is what you get.

I have a ziploc-style bag right now from one of my LHBSs.  The label says one tablet per 5 gallons of wort.  I also have a bottle from LD Carlson and those instructions say 1 tablet per 5-10 gallons.

Morebeer specifies one tablet is good for 10-15g and recommend cutting in half for 5g.

A tidbit for my fellow Whirlfloc aficionados: a single tablet weighs ~0.14 ounces.

Might serve useful if you're coming up on the end of a bag of Whirlfloc, you realize on brewday that you're out of tablets and all that's left in the bag is some powder.

Mmm, good to know.  I once bought a bag of tablets that looked like it had been stepped on by Sasquatch.  As I looked through the rest of the bags in the store I noticed they were all the same.  65% of a tablet here, 17% of one there, etc.   I just eyeballed it until I got to the end and then I dumped the dust in on that last batch.

Whirlfloc G is a granular version of whirlfoc and the dosage is 0.06 - 0.14g/gal so I assume that will be similar for the tab powder.

Because it wasn't created for homebrewers. And not everyone in the world uses imperial units.

Which is why I contacted the manufacturer.

Gee, 15 gallons you say. Oddly enough that's about 1/2 BBL.

WHODATHUNKIT!
