I have some ales coming up with 1099 and I envisioned a blonde ale where I bittered with something clean and then added some late hops. I have two ounces of Ella and all of the reviews I saw sounded nice... spicy, floral, herbal, a touch of Galaxy but then the other side is Spalt so nothing over-the-top, etc. But then one review said "star anise" when used in small quantities.  I definitely don't want that.  Does anyone have experience with it and know if anise is a part of its character?  Most reviews DO NOT mention that flavor.  Thanks.

I haven't brewed with it, but I've drunk a lot of Pelican's Umbrella, which is 100% Ella.  It's one of my favorite IPAs.  I think the description is pretty accurate, including the anise, although it's at a VERY low level.

Okay, thanks for that.  I would really like to avoid a beer that tastes like Nyquil.  :P

I've never had Ella come through like that.
