It was kid of a big deal as a child....but honestly, it's not that great of a story.

the basic story is humble farm boy goes to the big city and makes good.  there's hundreds of movies like that.

but there is no denying its pop culture impact and its impact on special effects in movies.

It’s Blazing Saddles in space, what do you want? Vader was Bart and Luke was the old lady saying “up yours Sheriff Bart”...

nothing like the star ship Enterprise dangling from a wire and the crew members doing synchronized moving from one side of the bridge to the other.

Standard quest plot. You get action and adventure. Good vs evil, growth of Luke as a person/hero. Some comic relief.

Wrestling (excuse me, "wrasslin"), as one example, has sustained great interest with same formula. That archetypal story is archtypal.

Also, when I was a kid, Leia was jiggly and made my pants tight.

The best thing about star wars is lightsabers. Without those it's just space magic and lasers, which are boring.

Growth of George Lucas' goiter

always reminds me of the book "a day no pigs would die" that we read in middle school.  one my friends would often say (with a heavy new england accent since the story takes place in rural VT) "I pulled that goitah (goiter), hahd (hard) and firm!"

it appears that quote does not exist in the book.  he must have made it up.  the kid did pull a goiter out of a cows throat though.  nearly lost his arm in the process.
