It'll be fine!

Your other thread about tippy vehicles made me laugh. My dad had a bronco 2 that he bought wrecked after a roll over. Then I bought a lightly wrecked one for $800 for my first vehicle (front end, not roll over). Drove it for a couple of years. And then sold it. Dude I sold it to flipped it within a few months. My dad later sold his and then saw it upside down in a ditch a year later!

2 bronco 2s, three times they flipped over!

If it's what ya'll want, go for it. But, have you considered an FJ Cruiser? Very similar vehicle with great offroad capability, but Toyota reliability. Probably way cheaper to maintain as well, considering the production span vs. the Hummer.

XTerras are capable vehicles that should be reasonably priced as well.

Yep. Both better choices.

Really looking like a BJ. Wife is happy about the crash test videos are phenomenal. The kid is over the moon excited. Great reviews from the usual reviewers and owners love them.

Huh. With all the negative press I'm kind of surprised a kid wants an h3. It also probably explains the otherwise very reasonable price though.

I think the h3 is the trailblazer with the Colorado engine. The trailblazer gas the 6 vs a 5 (although you could get a V8 in both). The 6 cylinder atlas a lot more powerful than the comparable Jeep i6. For the hummer and Colorado the cut it to a i5. I assume the i5 was also decent.

Parts, other than body panels, should be easy enough to obtain since it shared items from the trailblazer and Colorado. Should be more dependable than a Jeep.

As far as off roading, all SUV (not cuv) can handle mild to medium trails. If he is looking at more extreme trails I think that is where you will need dedicated parts and be ok with him breaking stuff.

Side by side comparison off roading the same trail between the FJ, H3, and Sequoia. The Hummer looked great, the FJ looked great, the Sequoia was a whole lot of cringing.

need to remember they are in Trump country plus I don't think the hummer hate is as strong as it use to be. The brand hasn't existed for close to 10 years.

isn't a sequoia pretty much a full sized truck turned into an SUV?  I'm not surprised it's not super off-road capable.  I usually viewed those vehicles as minivans for people who don't want to own a minivan.

it still exists up here.  trump won my district.

eta:  but I get what you are saying.

If you want something reliable, affordable, safe, easy to maintain and upgrade and great at offroad, you should really look at a 4runner. 4th gen 4x4 4runners can be found at a great price. The only major thing to look out for is frame rust.

The FJ's are nice also.

Hummer expensive to service/fix.

mechanically they are a trailblazer / Colorado. They are a general motor parts bin car. Should be cheap.

Body panels might be hard to get but it sound like this is going to get beat around off road so dents should not matter

It's not a car I'd consider for someone's first car. But I'm a cautious fellow.

I bought my oldest son a Ninja 250 for a first vehicle. We must have some serious helicopter dads here. It is a tank, he will be awesome.
