I was planning on another AR in a 18" .223/5.56 but have gotten interested in putting together a .300 Blackout instead. I generally like to keep my firearms in the same handful of calibers and not have shit all over the place, but this round really looks fun.

The most common AR build seems to be a 16" barrel. And firing subsonic rounds would limit this rifle to around 120 yards and less for accuracy.

I'll add a silencer and thermal scope. Just the ticket for stealth hog hunting or stealth home defense.

My brother just picked this caliber up last week, so we can go in snacks and reload our own.

Thoughts on this round?

I've been intrigued, but haven't pulled the trigger for the exact reasons you list.  I don't want to diversify just for the sake of it.  Running a suppressor on my otherwise stock AR isn't handclap silent, but it's pretty damn good.

To not pay out the nose on ammo you pretty much have to reload.  I'm not likely to break into that anytime soon so there's that too.

I usually consider a blackout to be about .300 BAC.

I no longer buy oddball rounds.  I want high availability, low cost rounds.  for handguns that means 9mm, 45, .380 for rifles that means 5.56/.223, 308, 270

I totally agree on the odd rounds. However with my brother also shooting one, I'll just add another shelf............

.300 blackout doesn't really fill a need for me. The ballistics are very similar to the Win30-30.

Since I already have two Win30-30 rifles. One bolt gun and one lever gun, I don't really see a need to throw in an odd ball round in just to get a semi-auto.

Too many, LoL.

In reloading alone .40, 45acp, 223, 7.63x39, 12ga. These are muh standard bulk go-to.

And I need to get into 7mm Rem mag as well as 30:06 and now perhaps the .300?

Feck.

I seriously need to start reloading.  especially 12g.  clays are something I really like doing and I can burn thru some shit in one afternoon.

feck, I just realized I dont have enough guns either.  feck.

Sure, but a flat of 12g in #8 shot is what $60-70. You would have to reload a ton to break even on the cost of the reloading equipment.

For sure on shotgun shells.  You gotta count the cost of your time.

Rifle, rolling your own, custom to your gun is where it's worth it.

I know a guy who slay hogs, and he stopped using .300 blackout as much because it doesn’t have the knowdown power. He’s seen it bounce off.

That said, shooting his suppressed thermal scoped stuff was fun.

I've considered the Blackout, still haven't talked myself out of it.  If I do, I'll take the SBR AR receiver I've got and go with a 10-12" barrel and a supressor.  The feral cats, dogs, and occasional 'yotes are on the uptick and could use a culling.

I only reload 7.62x54. I might add 30-06 to the rotation if I scope my Garand. My eyes aren't were they used to be. Open sights get me close, but I'd like to do better. I bought one mount from this company for a M28/76 and it's solid af. Will try again for the Garand and with a prism scope to allow the enbloc clips.

If I go with another AR build, it'll probably be AR10 in .308.  Kind of leaning the way Tony is with 'common' calibers.

I got into reloading same as home brewing-I like to roll my own.  However with .45 Colt, brass is so high reloading is the only way to go if you shoot often.

Yeah, I already gots an AR-10 in a 308. Slain several hogs with it. Old school 20" AR with carry handle and composite stock.

Feck. Feck. Feck.

I wanna another weapon but just can't decide on caliber.

It's either the blackout or another 223.

Considered a 6x45 if reloading? Necked up 223 to 6mm.
