I just saw something about how the Dayton shooter had 250+ rounds on him.  I assume that gun advocates will say that this is a mental health issue and not a gun issue but does the 250+ rounds thing suggest that something might be done about a person who looks like they're gearing up for a war?  I have seen that some of the gun owners here store a lot of ammo especially when it goes on sale so it sounds like the buying of large amounts is not a sign that someone is about to go postal, right?  I'm not into guns but the mass shootings always make be scratch my chin because I don't know if it's a gun issue, a social issue, a media issue, a mental health issue, a divisive government issue or a combination of any or all of those.

Nope.  That is a short afternoon at the range for many gun owners.  Even very casual shooters will burn through a couple hundred rounds in a single setting.  Bring along a couple buddies and couple guns in different calibers and I know of guys burning 5k of ammo in an afternoon completely recreationally.

Just my son and I did that this weekend.

Then today they are complaining about the capacity of the magazine.

It seems like people want to try to pass legislation to "prevent this type of thing from ever happening again"... but that's not realistic, is it?  In a free society, mass shootings just come with the scenery.

I guess so, if you think we are the only free society on the face of the earth.

Hong Kong? Are you high right now?

He is using economic freedom index. Which measures ability to move economic classes

This looks factors in more. Hong Kong is still pretty high

The Netherlands - Apply for ownership permit, may or may not issue, must register guns
Hong Kong - Apply for ownership permit, may or may not issue, must register guns
Switzerland - Can own, with an ownership permit, must register guns
Canada - Can own, with an ownership permit, most guns require registration
Denmark - Apply for ownership permit, may or may not issue, must register any gun except shotguns pre 2001

Per wiki - and it shows CAN is the least restrictive.  And CAN is very restrictive in my personal experience and talking to Canadians when I lived in both MI and ME.  You have to apply for register any firearm you bring across the border and use for hunting.  You get caught crossing the border without the paperwork, they take them away and charge you.  It's not hard to own shotgun, rifles have significant restrictions, and pistols are really hard to own there.

The canadians I have talked to about guns say it’s not that hard if you want them. Takes time and money, but you can get them with patience, especially if you don’t live in a big city. They don’t have the same obsession as some here.

I didn't want to turn this into "guns vs. no guns" but the Dayton police chief was asked about the weapon and the rounds used in the shooting and he said something to the effect of "it's very hard to understand how someone would be able to walk around with this much firepower and it makes for an unsustainable situation"... or something like that.  I just wondered if this shooter had every gun-owner's standard equipment or if he was rocking something more elaborate.
