Are they getting screwed up by all the self-driving systems in new cars?

I'm looking at a CX-5 that has radar ranged adaptive cruise control.  I'm wondering if they're making radar detectors too annoying to use.

I call them “bank detectors” because they only seem to alert you when you’re near a bank(the security system sends off a signal similar to a radar)

I've wondered how the companies stay in biz these days, doesn't seem like a big thing anymore, I used to have one (Valentine 1) but haven't used it in like 10-15 yrs, not even sure where it is these days actually.

I think speed traps all use lasers now. You might find someone just blasting their radar as they drive down the road or sitting under a tree taking a nap. So, a detector probably isn't useful even without the false positives.

Modern well-equipped cars blast a lot of radar. Collision avoidance and blind spot sensors go constantly. Then there's the adaptive cruise on freeways. That's a lot of noise on top of the auto doors and leaky detectors. I think even the best detectors will require a good amount of user analysis of what's happening.

I have a V1 I haven't used for years. Too many false alarms. I don't really speed that much since kids anyway. Usually 5-8+ and no one bugs you around here.

Best option to avoid speed traps is probably to use Waze.

Adaptive cruise control?!  I didn't know about this.  Sweet.

I thought speed trap radar was at 10.525 GHz, which is reserved for police use. Adaptive cruise control radar is mostly at 24 GHz shifting to 79 GHz. The frequency modulation of the chirp they use (chirp = constantly changing frequency, measure time delay by comparing frequency of incoming to outgoing wave) has some side bandwidth, but not enough to confuse 10.525 with 24 GHz.

Nope, my last one is sitting at the bottom of the Mississippi River after I got pissed at it and I threw it out the window going over a bridge.

Well I've had plenty of tickets. But in that case no I did not. I saw the cop with his radar gun standing right on the side of the road pointing at traffic. Thing never went off. Coupled with the many false alarms I just had enough of it.

I have an integrated radar detector and Waze on Android auto on the dash.

I don't bother with K band anymore. A lot of avoidance systems on domestic models seem to use that. Buick, GMC are two that always caused issues.

My old Cobra saved my bacon twice in the last 6 months. Here in the People's Socialistic Republik radar is in serious use on some back roads. You know, the ones are zoned 30 but are out in the country and have a house or two located over a hundred feet off the road.

Most likely some wanna-be race car driver with a loud fart pipe is not just doing 40 but more like 70 or 80 and the residents call the police for some speed limit enforcement. And some days said jackass gets his just due.

On similar road I saw my detector going off where it never does so I drop it back 10mph to the legal 30. Said jackass is now tailgating me. All he sees is the rear of my van and not the cop parked over the next rise in the road. I can only presume he does not have a radar detector. As I start to approach the source of GHz emissions said dimwit floors it and blows by me on a double yellow line. At that point all three vehicles are abreast. I doubt he ever saw the cop. After a few seconds the cop put the lights on and also blows by me. I eventually catch up with the two having a financial transaction a bit farther down the road. I gave officer friendly a big thumbs up. I almost wanted to stop and say "You write that one up, I'll double back and collect another one for ya."

But on interstate, you are correct. The collision avoidance system false allerts are a bit annoying. I believe the radar detector manufacturers are working on a way to resolve those false alerts though.

Cops here have better things to do.. they don’t have time for speed traps, etc.. I haven’t had a ticket in 17 years
