I grew one Cascade plant for maybe 12-14 years.  The last year I harvested, I got 23 lb. wet, which came out to 5+ lb. dried.  I realized I could buy all the Cascades I needed for a year for maybe $8 and that was it for my plant.  I've been trying to kill to off for the last 4-5 years.  This is what it looks like at the moment...

There is a lot of incorrect homebrew myth about drying hops.  For years I did it the slow way everyone talks about.  Then I went to Hop & Brew School and found the growers use 125-135F for about 3 hours.  I tried that and got much better results.

 

I use 130°F on my food dehydrator until the hops are dry, rotating the trays of hops as needed to ensure even drying.

 

Then vac-seal and stow in the freezer until needed.

it's the results from the growers that matter.  That's how they do it.

Yesterday was the 2nd and final harvest for this season: got ~8 oz dried on this round.  Dried them for ~3 hours at 130°F.  Smelled great going into the Foodsaver bag for vacuuming, sealing, and storage.

Thanks.  I will admit, I was a bit concerned at how pale they are, but when I picked them, they were papery and smelling good.

 

Most of the hops I buy commercially are darker green than these were, but I'm thinking them being the 2nd wave and it being later in the season might explain the pale color.  NBD.

 

Looking forward to brewing something with these soon.

I was talking to a new neighbor in his back yard. Turns out, he's got hops growing all over his back gate!

He thought they were some kind of poison ivy or something. I'm like NO! See the exact same plant that I'm purposefully growing in my back yard!?

 

Guy invited me to take all he had, which is nice but dealing with the fence is gonna be a pain.
