Jesus H. D. Christ on a jumped up rubber crutch does this ship suck. It’s the first time in 33 years I’ve contemplated using an injury to get sent home. I can’t hardly step out of my stateroom without getting pissed off. I will not let ignorance, and ineptitude slide in my workplace. In my industry it is literally life or death.

It’s the first time I’ve ever feared for my safety every time I come on deck. Today, the Chief Mate gave me a verbal warning for not putting on my life jacket inside the house during our weekly abandon ship drill. This is a giant no no. You train the way you fight. If you do it wrong while training, you’ll do it wrong when the actual fight comes. Our life jackets are designed to turn you face up in the water. If you put that thing on inside a flooding ship, 100% guarantee the 1,00 foot down ROV video from the salvage company has crystal clear footage of you dead, face up against the ceiling.

I told him I would put it on outside when we actually went to the lifeboat. He said now. I said no. He said this is your verbal for disobeying a direct order. I said fine. Type up the the written warning for next week, because I still won’t put it on until I’m outside. He didn’t like that at all.

Keep it coming Rami.  This is as good as a movie to most of us here in the PH.  Now, where did I put that popcorn?

Are these like the PFDs all boaters in the US are supposed to wear?

If so, throw the sucker on, just don't snap the clasps together.

You can slip out of it if needed.

Or am I totally missing the point here?

This is a type one. No slipping out inside a sinking ship once the water gets you.

I assume there is a regulation somewhere that says don't put it on until you are outside.  What's his reason for wanting everyone to put it on inside?  Has he always done it the wrong way and doesn't know the safety regulations, or does he just just pick and choose which ones he wants to follow?

I have a difficult time dealing with culinary “professionals” who have never heard of charcuterie. I can’t imagine how I would maintain when professional standards dictate life and death. I suppose “chef” could kill someone with food poisoning, but I think you get the drift. Safe travels Ram

Good luck with management. In my experience, they generally totally suck. As we said:

Process first

Mission second!

Safe travels!!  I agree with comments above.  I love hearing about your travels.  Update us on the ship's grub and post a few cool pics views from the ship if possible!!

Just left Shanghai. The only reason I’m not going to the doctor in Pusan day after tomorrow, and then flying home is the Ordinary Seaman we have in the deck department. I can’t leave this kid hanging. He’s right brand new to the industry. He had a bad time of it last trip, but he’s latched on to me, and he’s actually learning the trade, instead of getting yelled at for not knowing anything.

When I am The Boatswain, the first thing I tell an AB I’ve never met,or worked with, is tell me right now if you don’t know how to do something, or if you are unsure of the routine, and I will teach you. If I find out 2 weeks into the trip that you were bullshitting me, and I have to do it for you? Your fired.
