How do you think that would catch on here? Jack Ma calls it a huge blessing to have the opportunity to work 9am to 9pm, six days a week. Imagine how much cool stuff we could get done if we did that in the US!

We're already endorsing some socialist leaning presidential candidates, so maybe we aren't as far off as we'd think.

This is why China will eventually kick our ass.

And if you're going to work 12hr days at least have the decency to start at 5am.

China will only kick our asses until the workers figure out they are getting decked and until they institute real environmental protections on par with the USA

What's the environmental angle you're going for here? I assume JKor is just pointing out that China will eventually beat us because they work harder.

Definitely done my share, but I don't think I could do it six days a week in perpetuity. Not the way they do it in China, anyway, where you can't spend half of it drunk.

Did years of grad school like that. Decided I'd work less as a postdoc. The lab mates who are really successful/productive scientists did and still do work 70-80/WK.

The smart ones took their quantitative skills to Wall Street.

Yup, that and they're smarter.

ETA:  and less ethical.

american productivity is among the highest in the world . They can only compete with us in the marketplace because they feck their employees and they can price good cheaper (in part) cuz they don’t put any environmental protections in place. In terms of environmental protection standards the US manufacturing is among the highest, we also have the tightest automotive emission standards. If China is forced to play in a level field they can’t compete with us

When I was 21 I did 7 - 12 hr days. I was getting hell OT but it was damaging to my health. I was 6-1 and weighed a mere 135lbs when I finally quit

chinas productivity per hour worked is roughly 1/4 what the USA does. From a productivity standpoint they have a LONG LONG way to go

I wouldn't use productivity to compare the two nations. Very different economies.

Umm, no. Because of the "socialists" we have things like worker safety protections, child labor laws vacation, and overtime laws, (along with other examples). Do you think the company you work for would willingly "give" you any of that?

Bernie Sanders, (the most proclaimed Socialist politician) is all about workers' rights and benefits.

Well it sounds like we're really well cared for at work. Might be risky to let us leave for significant portions of the day...
