I know we had a "colloidal silicon dioxide solution" conversation once before.  I was organizing my beer bunker a little bit today and I ran across my giant bottle of this stuff.  I think I mentioned that the bottle had a label stuck over the instructions so I had to look for some instructions online.  Today I carefully peeled off that label and I see that it says to add 1ml per liter (so about 20ml) to 'cold beverage' and stir or swirl and allow to work for 24 hours.  Then it says to repeat the process without disturbing the sediment (so don't agitate) for "rapid clarification in 48 hours".  It also says to "remove the sediment from beverage" which I took to mean "toss the first beer".  Is this how you use your biofine... with 2 doses?

Nope.  I do one dose at kegging.  It will vary between 1-2 tablespoons depending on how cloudy the source beer is and how clear I want the final beer.  I put it in, fill on top to mix and then put in the fridge.  The beer is usually at 40-55 degrees when I keg from the cold crash.  I always discard the first pint (unless I am using a floating diptube) because it is sludge.

I've had some decently clear beer without finings and some beers that were more stubborn and my guess is that's dictated by how much trub ends up in the fermenter.  Sometimes it's almost none.  Other times I get a bit more and it's really unpredictable and if I get to the point where I'm transferring wort+trub when I only have 3.5 gallons in the fermenter... I have no real way of avoiding the trub.  In those cases, it would be nice to have an option.  Clearly gel solution is one but now I wonder if these various colloidal silicon dioxide solutions have different instructions for use.

How about this. I made 10 gallons of pills and split it between 2 kegs. The first keg I drank cleared pretty quickly. When I finished that keg I started on the second and it's never cleared. Tastes fine but has haze. I don't get it.

Can you guys get Biofine? Silicone dioxide is more for kettle foam control. Fermcap? Anyway, I’d be careful adding it to the cold side without boiling. Try playing that stuff up sometime.

I'm assuming Ken is talking about a giant bottle of Williams Warn. I have one as well and have had great luck with the stuff. I recently tapped a IPA that I used about 30oz of hops total, 10oz of which were dry hops and is super clear. I will try and post a picture soon.

That was my assumption as well.  If I remember the active ingredients were very similar.

Yes, the WilliamsWarn stuff.  Matt, do you dose it twice as the instructions call for?  I did use it a couple times and did not get great results but I don't think I was stirring/agitating.  Then I agitated it and it was better but I honestly thought a gel solution was better.  But now I see that dosing it twice is the standard process.  Matt, share whatever else you can... when do you add it, is the beer cold, how many doses, do you agitate, etc?  I really want to see if the stuff is better than I originally thought.  Cheers.

Twice must be specific to teh WW stuff as every time I have read about Biofine and talked to Brewers ( both home and commercial) it is a one and done.

I'm torn because I did dose some stubborn-to-clear batches with gel solution and they cleared up wonderfully.  But I'm curious if this stuff used the proper way would make the beers even MOAR clear.  :P

So long story short, yes I do exactly what the bottle says.

After I have crash cooled for a few days in the fermenter I will keg. I add the WW into the keg first and rack the beer on top. I seal it, purge out the oxygen and give it a few turns upside down and back to help mix. Then I hook up the co2 to carb. After 24 hours I crack open the keg pour in the second dose and seal/purge it back up. Hook up the co2 for another 24 hours. I don't really agitate that second dose. After 48 hours before I disturb the keg I pour out a pint or so. From here it either sits and waits it's turn for a open tap or I put it straight on. If it sits for a bit I will pour out some more beer before I move it to a tap as more will settle. If it goes straight on I will notice it might take a couple beers to get super clear, but the first few are just a little cloudy.

And eventually the clarity is good, right?  Thanks for the help.

That's exactly what I was thinking.  I should be able to get some mileage out of this.
