I found this a little odd and a bit disturbing.  on the surface it sounds like the cops were able to search a private DNA database.  doesn't say which one...  however, makes a strong case for not doing 23&me or AncestryDNA and etc IMHO

Once you have it done, they own the data and the sample. They can share it or sell it to anyone.

It says it was a public DNA database.

 

 

 

Cops ...got a break when DNA and a search of a public genealogy website

 

 

Detectives across the country said they were able to locate suspects in 28 cold cases this year after uploading crime scene DNA to GEDmatch.com, a public genealogy website

Prolly best to avoid this website.  Just to be safe.
