I want to make an american wheat, and have some extra rye on hand. I was thinking about doing about 10% rye in the batch. Thoughts?

YES!!I like rye in my wheat beers. Not sure how much rye character you will get with 10% I like to use a little more but I say go for it.

I put a little wheat in my rye beer sometimes. For my taste anything less than 20% rye is a wasted effort. That being said, I don't use a ton of wheat in my rye ales - so a lot of wheat and rye together could make for an interesting sparge. May want to start with an acid rest.

I'm feeling adventurous. I think I will do 20% rye then.I've done a wheat wine in my MLT with over 50% wheat, and was fine with batch sparging.

I vote for some rye too. I had a session Am. Rye on tap this summer that was well received. I have a couple higher gravity Am. Ryes on tap now - actually out of BJCP guidelines but you get the idea. Wyeast 1010 with all of them. I like them too.I've done several with a mix of rye and wheat too. While 20+% is a number you hear a lot, less rye will shine if the recipe is light enough. One of my favorite adjunct grains. FWIW, I think with a gravity around 1.050 or higher I prefer Wyeast 1272 and turn it into a RyePA rather than an Am Rye.

It is done.for 10 gallons10# wheat10# pale4# rye(I know, it isn't exactly 20%, but it is close enough for me - I was doing the calculation as I was pouring and measuring the grains)(I made up this hop schedule as I brewed, I think it looks alright)1oz cascade FWH1.75oz williamette @ 60.5oz williamette @ FO.5 oz cascade @ FOUS-05 (it is what I had on hand)Actual volume was greater than 10g, but I expect almost all of it will fit into 2 kegs, and any excess will be bottled and primed.I'm interested to see how this turns out. I brewed this to serve on the 21st, so hopefully I can time things just right (I expect 5-7 day primary, then transfer to keg to carbonate for a few days till I need to serve it).Taking a day off in the middle of the week is awesome.
