Anyone seen a seen particulate filter to use in line prior to chilling?

 

I have a bazooka screen on my kettle, but some particulate gets through because the mesh isn't that fine. I was thinking maybe there's a filter attachment for a hop rocket or something like that that is stainless and could be used on the hot side prior to going into a plate chiller.

 

Now that I'm going to brew a bunch of IPA's I'm thinking I need to make sure I don't clog my therminator. Of course I could just get an immersion chiller and not worry about it, but if I can get something cheaper then I'd like to go that route.

I tried everything so the plate chiller wouldn't clog.  The plate chiller didn't clog but everything in front of it did.  Been using a whirlpool, 12 min settling and a dam for the pickup tube for years.

As far as I know there are no pre-made filters for the hop rocket.  It would be a nice Idea.  I think you could use a bag with rice hulls in there to filter or contact this guy and get one made https://www.utahbiod...wingfilters.php

I bought one of those stainless screen cylinder jobbies that you put into the boil to keep hop debris contained.  It worked a little bit but it still let out a lot of particulate and some brewers said they had reduced hop character.  I'm going to just assume that these Brew Bags are only meant to be used in the mash, not in the boil, right?  Imagine using one in the boil, chilling and then lifting out the bag with all the schputz in it.  Lately my strategy has been to slighty increase my batch size, make sure that I get a good, quick chill and also make sure that I chill far enough down.  I might stir the kettle and chill for 15 straight minutes.  Then I place the kettle in the sink with ice and water and let it settle for at least another 30 minutes.  Then I transfer.  The last 10-15 batches have been great this way... 5.25 gallons of ultra-clear wort go into the fermenter and I'm getting decently clear beer without finings.  I'm still noodling with some other ideas.

You can get hop bags from the BIAB material here.  I have a couple but can not remember if I used them or not.  I have the SS ones as well and gave up on those a while back.  I will only use them now if I use whole hops and I am trying to come up with an alternative.

I used a custom (larger than his stock hop bags) Wilser biab bag with a spider for years with no complaints. I switched to a 300u SS filter from Arbor Fab, used as a spider and once again a little larger than the stock ones. Very little hop material gets out and I have no trouble getting my beers to be as bitter or flavorful as I want. With either solution I always give the wort/hops inside the spider a little swirl periodically during the boil.

 

THESE are also getting some favorable reviews.

 

In either case these are not bargain solutions
