I keep grain at my office when too much is on hand to keep at home.  Temperature controlled etc.  I cut open a bag of Weyermann Vienna today to weigh out for Saturday and gave a small handful to a few of my partners and told them to chew on it.  That they'd understand where some of a beers taste comes from.  They all actually liked it.  Tasting that cereal sweetness and how it has that hot cereal component.

Next time any one of them has a beer I guarantee they'll correlate that taste and flavor.  That's all.  I just appreciated the look of enjoyment on their faces.

I'll do that especially with base malt so I can tell how much flavor it has.  I agree it's a nice flavor.  The crystals are a little friable... crispity-crunchity.

The Vienna had a very nice sweetness to it.  It has me considering doing an all Vienna, splash of Carahell Staro Prague something or other....

This is also a good way to double check that the malt is still good to brew with. A friend once had a few back-to-back batches that had an aweful off flavor. I went through some things over the phone with him, and then after a few questions asked him to try his grain, and that was the culprit. He bought new grain and the problem never came back.

My daughter also likes to go down to the beer room in the basement where I keep my specialty grains, and will unscrew them and give different ones a try. She seems to enjoy it and tells me about what she tastes.
