Dang, I thought I was hardcore stupid/stubborn for never getting a pump, but no mill is true hardcore.

I don't think not using a pump is either of those things.  for me a pump wouldn't help me that much so why use one?  for other people it makes a lot of sense so they should use them.  I've set myself up to utilize gravity and I don't have a need to recirculate.

Yup, it all depends on how you setup your system. I'm personally scared of hot water over my head, so I wanted a single tier setup for my 3 vessel system, which meant I needed at least 1 pump for batch sparging. I now have two so that I can recirculate my HLT with the electric element while also moving wort around when needed. Not a need by any means, but it cuts down time and is a convenience.
