Recently I finished The Maid. It was OK. Kind of frustrating first half, but good payoff. Not thrilled with the end. Borderline chicklit.

I finished Ben Coes series and working on the Grey Man again. Not sure which book, but 1/2 way though the series.

Just finished "Slow Horses" by Mick Herron - if you like John LeCarre, you will probably like this. Spy tale, a bit slow to start but really, stick with it and half way through the book it'll really pick up.

It's good. I'm at Bad Actors and then I'm caught up in the series.

Le Carre is kind of dry and slow for me. But I agree, if you like his stuff, you'll probably like Herron. He's a funnier, more entertaining version of le Carre.

OK, got to comment on this.

I read both Kings of the Wyld AND Bloody Rose on George's say-so, and honestly - I want my 2 weeks back. They are formulaic and the one "hook" in there (warriors are bands, gig terminology, etc) fails to lift it above the "Meh - another fantasy world book with trolls and swords". The plot doesn't so much twist as mildly undulate, and pretty much every part of both stories was utterly predictable.

...

I don't think I recommended Bloody Rose, as I have not but barely started it myself.  I thought Kings was fun, if not great literature.

I’m onto the fifth book in the series in four weeks, I know Dago really liked it. Really fun.

It's not helped by having read Perdido St Station recently which is EVERYTHING these books aren't - beautiful writing, awesome plot, well crafted characters - so basically I'm gonna give it a 2/10 and that's because I think I'm being hard on it because China Meville is so awesome.

Lol, he’s the other author taking up my current library allotment. Rail Sea and Kraken are in there. I’ve read a bunch of his stuff and haven’t been disappointed yet.

Just finished the Grimnoir series based on a recommendation here. Before that I finished the Scholomance trilogy by Naomi Novik, and also read Walkaway by Cory Doctorow, which are very different books with plots driven by some very similar economic theories.

I guess this is really where I am with the two of them - except I knew I was headed back to the UK and wanted a couple of books for the flight and the library didn't have 'em - I would have been OK with them as a library book, but I ended up paying full price for 'em and want both my $25 AND my 2 weeks back :)

They aren't awful - they are just ....meh. There are a bunch of better books out there, but while I was telling my sister about how meh these were she got me to try "Slow Horses" which IS genuinely good so I guess in the end it worked out OK.
