I don't have an easy source of cheap bulk base malts anymore.  I see you guys talking about label peelers but after shipping is factored in it doesn't seem that cheap but maybe I'm missing something.  help me get back to sub $1/lb high quality base malts (TF, best malz, CMC which is even cheaper)!!!!

I paid $0.86/# for CMC pale the last time I bought it. I found a store near Worcester that does grain buys. I will let you know if I see anything local to you.

any good deals on best malz or similar for german type stuff?  the other malt I want to buy again is GP.  I could almost use that in place of both 2-row and MO.  a very nice in-between malt.

Do you have a familiar local brewery that might toss you a bone if you ask? My club meets at a brewery each month and a couple times a year we ask if we can place an order and they oblige.

I haven't had time to make the connection with anyone actually local yet.  I go out so infrequently that it's tough to do.

I like flavorful basemalts and Ill pay good money for them. There's a time and place for the flavorless stuff too though. All depends on your goals.

I recall being able to get avangard from a local lhbs for a pretty reasonable price. If it's comparable to best malz I might give it a go.

I used that before this bag of Swaen.  It was fine, a but less flavor than some but nothing that was offensive.  I have not used Best, Franco - Belges was my standard before this.  Avangard local is 72/bag!!

I'm pretty sure I could get it for $60.

What is your preferred pils malt?

For years I used Franco- Belges with good results.  I am happy with the Swaen that I recently got and will continue with that if I can keep getting it locally.

Anyone have a good source for bulk Golden Promise? Label Peelers doesn't carry it. I'm also curious about the Barke malt based on the talk here - may make a pseudo lager this winter (Baltic Porter most likely.)

There are lots of good base malts out there.  Price is going to vary depending on your source, barley varietal, maltster, etc.  If you can buy from a local brewery, go for it.  They are your best bet.  If you have a local homebrew store, that's probably your next best bet.  Lastly is ordering online, and you will get hit with shipping charges.  I've been a homebrewer for many years, and my local store has always been reasonable taking into account all other factors.
