I had a bunch of "new to me" hops and already used some (Apollo, El Dorado, Lemon Drop) and I'm using some more in a sort of kitchen sink APA that I have coming up including Ella.  I'm left with some Azacca and also Loral (both in unopened 2oz bags from Yakima Valley).  I see that Loral is "super Noble" and I also have a note that says to use Azacca late but with another hop to compliment it.  Would it be as easy as using them together or would the "intense fruitiness" of the Azacca overpower the Loral and render it useless?  When I have this 1028 up and running I would like to use up these off-the-map hops.  Thoughts?

Loral is from Glacier and US Nugget. Make lager. Off-the-map hops = Off-the-map lager

Well, for me Glacier and Nugget are ale hops.  They're GREAT ale hops but I would typically use them in an ale.  Plus, I have Noble hops for days here.  :P  I guess I'm just wondering how to marry the Loral hops.  I had Drez mention once that the Lorals were kid of "meh" and I had someone mention to me (you, I believe) that Azacca can be used to bitter or can be used late but to combine it with something else.

I’ve used the Lorals quite a bit. They are really nice and subtle. Most recently I used them in the dark lager also in one of the Oktoberfests I made.

After my realization with Azacca in high quantities I would save that and use it late.  I used Loral in an IPL and it was OK.  Herbal for sure but would be OK as a lager hop.

What if I just made a blonde ale with the 1028 and used something clean to bitter (Nugget, maybe) and then used Loral and Glacier late? Did you see what I did there? It's one big happy family... mom, dad, offspring. I have all of those hops.

Okay, so maybe something like that. Pale Ale malt plus some Vienna, Nugget to bitter and then late Glacier & Loral (2 ounces each) maybe in the last 5 minutes and then into the whirlpool or something. That sounds like a winner and even though it would be an ale (1028), it might look like a lager.

A pound of Loral hops arrived this afternoon.  I got them for $10 from Yakima Valley.  I made a couple of beers with them that are both on tap right now and those were my first time using them.  The "super-noble" description seems accurate... herbal, floral, clean, etc.  I keep seeing "lemon-citrus" and also "dark fruit" descriptors but I'm not getting that.  Maybe I didn't use enough.  The lineage is Glacier and Nugget as Neddles mentioned above but also a French hop (Tardif de Bourgogne) is in there too.  I happen to really like Nugget as a dual-purpose and I like Glacier as a late hop.  I'm going to make a single-hop blonde ale with these later this week.  18-20 IBUs at the start of the boil and then maybe just 2 ounces dropped into the boil at flameout and allowed to steep with the lid on for 15-20 minutes and then 1056.  Anyone else using these regularly?  I saw a few articles mentioning that many craft breweries consider it a super hop (Lagunitas, Sierra Nevada, Stone) and that it's been embraced by homebrewers as well.

Threw out the rest that I had. Just was not my favorite and only so much room in the hop freezer. I am curious they consider it a super hop...I do not get that. I also think mine were from 14 so they may not have been in the best shape.

I will report back on this next beer I make with them.  I currently have a "gold lager" on tap that I made with a combination of GP and Pilsner and then I used Nugget to bitter and Loral as a finishing hop.  Yesterday I was drinking it and kept wondering what I had done with the late hops.  A check of the notes... Loral.  They seem to hit my tastebuds right and it's not surprising that they're not your favorite.  Our tastes are very different.

I really like these in my lagers. I just kegged a Maibock today that came out pretty nicely. Brewed an amber lager with them and sterling last week. I have similarly high expectations

Doobah, you also used Loral in your Czech Dunkel, right?  That's a ringing endorsement right there.

Yup. I really like these. Perfect for lagers. I’ll try in some ales soon.
