Fellas,

After much reading I am considering getting a bag and trying the BIAB/no sparge.  There's one company with many great reviews with the continued downside of how fragile the bag is.  Any good recommendations on bag/company to solicit?  Also what do you use to stir considering this part of the process seems to be a culprit of damaging the bag?

Thanks,

I have two of these https://biabbags.webs.com/ and have had no issues.  I also had one of these custom made https://www.brewinab...bag-for-kettles for a MLT I no longer have.  This one was heavier and had better handles but I actually thought the performance was below the ones in the first link.

I use a very large SS whisk to stir with.

This is what I am using. It's very well made. I stir with the long handled plastic spoon you see at every home-brew shop. One last thing to consider is something to go on the bottom of the kettle if you are going to direct fire the kettle with the grain-weighted bag inside of it. I use a pizza screen with small stainless bolts going through it into some stainless cap nuts. This keeps it about 1/2" off the bottom.

That's a good idea with the screen.  My vision is to use one vessel, my keggle, heat all water, add the bag, grain, mash in, close the lid and insulate with some type of strapped on jacket.  I can't imagine losing that much heat in the important 40 or so minutes due to my logistics :) Keep the mash to 60 minutes on average and then lift and drain as normal.  In the event I'd have to add heat I think I would elevate the bag as you suggest, heat the kettle stir again and continue.

Does this sound good?

Sounds good to me. I use 2 vessels and a rims but what you describe should work with no issues.

For the cost of the bag and minor other needs, I'm just curious to see what I can minimize and maximize: lessening equipment and time and increasing overall efficiency to the mash as well as the brew day.  This is my goal in all brewing aspects going forward into batch 101 :)

Fellas what’s your multiplier for water loss in the mash? I use .11 x grain weight. The BIAB calculator uses .045

Not for my process. Granted, I am not the norm!

I thought it was to be avoided!

but also if you can hang the bag it seems like gravity would squeeze it anyway.

Yep, and they are cheap. I put a small notch in my plastic spoon to grab the edge of the screen so I could pull it out of the pot easily before the boil.
