It could happen in MLB now, right? Intentional walk. After that there are a lot of combinations, all including a double play.

Seems like the most likely scenario would be something like this...

Out recorded on first pitch

Second batter (out of this world hitter) intentionally walked

third batter hits into double play on his first pitch

There are other scenarios, of course, including ones requiring a triple play - and a ton if you include really odd rules. (Illegal pitches, switching batters boxes, etc.)

Yeah that's the sort of unusual scenario I was referring to. Although I don't think it's officially called a balk without runners on base.

I hope they don't get too crazy with some of these rules.  I don't mind small mods to the game if they think it's necessary or it just makes sense but the pitch clock is making me a little nervous.  Mound visits being controlled seems okay.  I remember when I played softball... if the game went past the one hour mark, you began your at-bat with a 2-2 count.  You couldn't really take a pitch.  I understand it but I didn't like it.  :D

Doesn’t batting out of order lead to an out without a pitch being thrown?

It's a complicated rule. IIRC, the only time there's a penalty is when the batter who batter early gets on base and that is recognized before the next hitter sees a pitch.

I guess these days it's possible to intentionally walk three guys and pick them all off without throwing a pitch.

Wait I don't get it.  How do you intentionally walk someone without throwing 4 balls?

Stupid new rule.  You can declare an intentional walk and the batter is automatically on first.  I suppose to speed the game up.  It sucks.  Every once in a while things went wrong.  Pitchout too far and the ball gets away.  Pitch to close and the batter hits it. That makes the game a bit more fun since it's supposed to move slow

Did anyone else bother to read the article?  Extra innings for some dumbass reason start with a runner on first base.  From there its a ground out in combination with a double play off of two pitches.

Stupid rule is stupid.

If you are in a hurry to get your post in there is no time to read the article you are discussing!

Yes, that is a rule that I forget sometimes.

However, I have never watched the video.  So I have that going for me.

I gotta say though, if they are gonna speed up the game, I don't mind this rule, over limited mound conferences and a pitch clock.

I wasn't in love with the rule change when announced. I like it now, though.

Rules to speed up the game screw with the organic nature of the game.

When I was a kid, we went to the College World Series and the first inning lasted 58 minutes.  At the end of the inning, you would have thought that the game was over based on the number of hits, runs AND pitching changes.  It was freaking awesome.  The remaining 8 innings took just over an hour.  Really bizarre.

When we lived in California, we went to a minor league game that was having their "not the" 4th of July fireworks.  That game went 15 or 16 innings.  It was late.  We had young kids in our group.  It was a friggin blast.

I don't go to a baseball game intending to "make it to a party" at a set time afterwards.  That is my destination for the afternoon/evening.
