Fellas, I'm organizing a club grain buy and wanted to know if anyone used Weyermann Bohemian Pils and if so, what do you think? I've used the standard and also the Barke Pils and enjoyed them both. Just trying to change it up a bit.

Also on my list is Weyermann standard Vienna over Barke and also a sack of Barke Munich. With the exception of the Bohemian Pilsner I've used them all with much enjoyment.

I think I used it and I made good beer with it.  I can't remember if this is the one that's supposed to be 'less-modified'.  The floor-malted stuff was inconsistent, the Barke Pils has always produced great beers and Weyermann Vienna, Munich 1 and Munich 2 have always been good and I have all three of those in the house.  My guess is that Chils will have the best answer for you.

Between you and Mr. Chils I agree. Gonna get a sack of Vienna and split some Munich and Pils. Which tells you where my recipe design head is at lately :)

The thing is... I have made some very good beer with malts that I was not sure about... Avangard, Dingeman's, Rahr Premium Pils and a number of others.  It just seems that when the malt is "on", then everything turns out well.  Yes, I suppose that they all have their small traits but I have had mostly good luck with a lot of malts.  This Swaen Pils is very nice as well.  The issues I had with a few Weyermann malts was that the beer ended up tasting kind of "dirty" and that seemed to happen with the floor malted stuff.  I remember someone commenting "of course it tastes dirty... it was on the floor!".  :P

I have an "American Premium" where the vast majority of the grist was Swaen Pils and it will be a good test for how well that malt works.  I will make a pilsner soon as well with an even higher percentage of that malt... will be a good test.

I've never been disappointed with Weyermann although I've never had the malt on the dirty floor :)

I made the best and worst beer in my life with Weyermann floor malted bopils. 1st sack was awesome so I bought 2 more sacks. Those 2 sacks made beer that tasted like sweaty gym socks. Took me about 4 batches to figure it out.

I brewed a 1gal smash with it just to make sure and it was horrible. I heard that weyermann stored some it improperly before shipment and it molded. They sold it anyway. A CS rep named Gabe at NB told me they would replace my malt and then never did. I gave up after months of dealing with them over it and gave it to a friend for livestock feed.
There are threads about this on the web with people trying to figure out what's going on. I just read one on probrewer so I guess that shit is still in stock somewhere.

F Weyermann and F Northern Brewer. I have no faith in either one. My last malt buy was Castle and it was good stuff

Up until recently, Weyermann pils was one of the main base malts in my brewery.  But no more.

Expensive, and for the last 2-3 years, I'd get this wierd honey-like flavor in every beer where I used Weyermann pils.  Sometimes stronger, sometimes less, but always noticeable, and I didn't like it at all.

My new go-to is Avangard pils; I started using it about 2 years ago, and I like the flavor much more than Weyermann.  Still has what I think of as "pils" malt character, but cleaner than Weyermann, and without the honey flavor.

I'm done with Weyermann, especially their pils malts.

Avangard is good.  I had a couple of 10-pound bags here and used them recently for some beers that came out great.  No inconsistency with it... always solid.

Avangard is good.

Just finished a sack of Avangard and had no issues.  I replaced it with Swean and have a rye pilsner that should be getting kegged any day to see how I like that malt.

My beers with Swaen pilsner have been good.  The Swaen "ALE" malt that I bought seemed a little thin and bland compared to something like a Rahr Pale Ale malt.  I can't pass up the Swaen malts for $36 (or whatever I've been getting them for) from Label Peelers.

I just got the Pils from them.  I stayed with CMC for pale malt, price was right!
