It's HomeBrewCon Time (ok, it was HomeBrewCon time last week. We're barely recovered!) In this special live episode we cover a lot of ground including AHA news with Gary Glass, New Zealand Brewing, sample beers from Chile, dig deep into hops with YCH, talk winning with Oregon Homebrewer of the Year, taco beer with Texas Brewing, drop lager results and revisit T-90/Cryo, Niko's back, Brewcraft has a ton of great stuff on deck and we close talking to Charlie P on his retirement tour! Phew!

Denny, Are you guys looking for suggestions for upcoming Experimental Brewing podcasts?

I'm interested in seeing if an instant pot can be used as an autoclave for sanitizing yeast slants.

We're always looking for ideas...a podcast is a beast that needs to be fed!  I'll look into it, but AFAIK an Instant Pot needs liquid in it.  Don't know how that would work for slants.

The liquid would be water and it is turned in to steam under pressure to sanitize all of the equipment- tests tubes, lids. The question is if the instant pot can produce enough pressure and hold it long enough to equal an autoclave.

Got it.  Another question...whether or not it equals an autoclave, does it do a good enough job to use in place of one?

just found the answer....an autoclave gets to 249F and the Instant pot doesn't go that high.  It maxes at 244 and the working temp is more like 220.

That would be the purpose of the podcast. I wouldn't want to use it to sterilize medical equipment but it should work for beer yeast.

This is the link to the video series that got me thinking about building a home yeast farm.

For whatever reason, the links do not work but this is the name of the guys YT channel.

We interviewed Bryan on a podcast episode.  I'm very familiar with him.  I did yeast ranching for 5-6 years..that's where WY1450 came from.  Finally got to be more work than it was worth, but if you're interested you should give it a try.  But I never autoclaved anything.
