My LHBS just got new owners earlier this month; they are eager to get really involved with brewers, and posting alot stuff via social media.

I just saw a video. Racking a pale ale to secondary, via a funnel. Made me cringe. Do I be that guy and say something? Im not one to troll; but c'mon.

On one hand I have a very good LHBS run by people who are only marginally into brewing.  If someone walked in there needing good advice, I'm not sure they would get it.  But the people are nice and the store is well-run and stocked with a lot of good ingredients and equipment.  I also have another supplier and the woman who runs it is a BJCP judge and a very good brewer.  Her store is also well-run and well-stocked and then she has the good advice to go with it.  Can you post a link to this video?  I don't want to "OUT" them but I would love to see that transfer with a funnel.

Next time i stop by the shop, i will mention something. Nobody likes a beer that tastes like it was dryhopped with amazon prime boxes.

I guess I just don't understand someone getting into the homebrew supply business but not understanding that they're doing something so unbelievably wrong.  Even when I transferred to secondary I never, ever did it that way.  I knew that was not acceptable 18 years ago and I'm not the owner of a supply house.  It's unreal.

Oh, I can see it.  You're young and new to homebrewing and full of enthusiasm but short on knowledge. It's unfortunate that the previous owners didn't bring them up to speed.  If they financed the buyout.............

From what I understand, they got the store for a song; the owners who just sold bought the shop from the original owner 15 years ago, and built it up, expanded, etc. While profitable, the last owners just want to retire and enjoy life, husband and wife team in their mid 60s, and this was their 2nd career- cant blame them for that.

The new owners have a strong business background- which is another skill set that's good to have. I just don't dig the passing of less the best brewing practices; either out of just not knowing or not caring.

Here's the rub- friend of mine commented, In a respectful manner: "That's a way to expose the beer to too much O2- drastically will effect flavor. I would recommended using a siphon if you want to secondary."

Owner quips back: "I know. Didnt want to inventory one out."

Whoa. Was this learned in the Mr. Krabs school of business? We are brewers, and we all have a cheap side to us- but can't shell out a couple bucks for a racking cane and a 6 foot of tubing?

Huh? They wanted to sell out their funnel stock? 

I use one every starter day to put my harvested yeast in a flask.  Nice to have on the cold/pre-fermentation side.  Post fermentation...............

I relish that I finally have a great LHBS.  Well, it's not that local:  40 minutes up the road in Fort Worth, but at least it's on my side of the town.  The owner is super nice.  He's more into kind of weird beers- sours, barrel-aged, and such.    But is open to new things.  He ordered Brewtan B when I told him about it and an online buyer promptly bought all of his inventory.   He's gotten my wife into cheese-making and pickling too.   It's a huge win for me.

Just an update- I've invited the new owners to our last brew club meeting, which was last night before this questionable practice video was shared. After about an hour into the meeting, one owner started breaking balls about the video/transfer in question. It led to a discussion about how secondary is only good for certain styles and off flavors. Turns out, one of the owners is a novice to the brewing world- hey we all were new brewers at one time. Laughter was shared by all. Like to this was a hard lesson learned by a new brewer by some veterans.

Reminds me of my apprenticeship of my trade.
