I'm a retail category manager and buyer, so I'm probably closer to 80%.  I always tell myself that they HAVE to sell what they're selling.  I do NOT have to buy anything that one particular salesperson is selling.  I play the long game with a lot of them; help them out on one or two deals they're stuck with will go a long way on future deals that you need some wiggle room on.  It never hurts to ask if there is a quantifier (price, qty, terms, etc) that I absolutely need to make the deal work.  If you leave the final yes/no call in their court, a salesman will usually bend over backwards to keep the negotiation rolling.  Also helps if you can find people with personal stuff in common.  I work with some guys out of MN that have kids similar to my age and also enjoy boating, fishing, beer, etc.  Makes for fun trade shows!
