I just dumped out the hop freezer looking for Simcoe and had a whole ounce of it. Fail on my part. I guess the Simcoe APA will get changed to either a Citra or Galaxy APA.

Citra and Galaxy? That sounds more like an unplanned success

I was really in the mood for straight up simcoe. But I guess this will do. Not sure how I can have 3+ pounds of galaxy and no simcoe

Now that I've been vac-sealing my hops, I'm sure I have some older, open packages where the hops are in less-than-desired shape. I have a bunch of unopened 1-oz packages and I ordered some ziploc-type bags of 2 and 4 ounce packs from HopsDirect awhile back and those are good. But when that $5-per-pound and $5-per-five-pounds ( ) thing happened I had to get a sealer. I should start tossing some stuff.

Yea, into my freezer!

No, seriously. I have some bags of stuff that just looked awful... Pilgrim, some Centennial, Merkur, some old Opal, half an ounce of Saaz, some grungy-looking Nugget, a quarter-ounce of Horizon, etc. Just old stuff. Occasionally I'll be happy that I saved a half ounce of this or that and use it up on the next batch but other times those hops just sit. Adios!
OH! And way in the back covered in a pile of frost... the remaining 15 ounces of Belma from the $5 pound I bought however many years ago. SEE YA!!!!

I threw out about 7+ pounds yesterday and there may be a few more still.

Yeah, that's about a twice yearly thing for me.

I need to start doing it more often. This is about the second time in the last 6 months I have done a clean out. The last time all my leaf hops went. They just take up too much room.

If hops for $5 a pound becomes a normal thing, I would have no problem using the majority of hops when they're fresh and then tossing the remainder if I thought it was dicey to use them. Also, with the vac-sealer, I feel like you can really extend the life of hops and hang onto them and use them longer. What I really need to do is stop buying hops with the intention of making "this beer" and then never making that beer and having the hops just sit there. Also, I need to buy more 'multi-purpose' hops that can be used in various ways so I can use them quicker. I've been burned by using bad hops late in the boil... Mmm, that's a delicious gym sock pale ale you have there, Ken!

I just threw them in a spreadsheet and so far I have 36+ pounds of hops and I have not cataloged done one box yet. I need to get brewing!

Oh Geez! I got rid of those a long time ago. Can't believe you still had it!
