Did a quick search and couldn't find a thread.

If you haven't been on the internet the last couple of days, there is an audioclip from vocabulary.com that either sounds like "laurel" to some listeners and "yanny" to others.  It apparently has something to do with frequencies and it's just amazing that it does.  I found this website that has a tool that adjusts the frequencies.

A few questions...

1.  What word do you hear first?

2.  How far do you have to slide the bar before you hear the other?

3.  I know we have some audio-engineers in here... can anyone explain this?  I get that it is has to do with frequencies, but that's like saying "it's snow because its too cold for it to be rain".

I hear a leprechaun saying "burn them all." Anyone else? I haven't clicked the link yet though.

It changes for me- first time I heard laurel, and thought how could anyone hear yanny.  Then the next time I listened to it I heard yanny.  Playing with the slider on the NYT page I had the same thing- heard laurel, even when putting the slider almost all the way right.  Then after I heard yanny, I heard that for almost every setting.  The harmonics make it like a Magic Eye picture for your ears- once your brain 'sees' it, the different sound is obvious.

Perhaps what you call "news" needs a bit of adjustment. Just thinking out loud here.

Yeah, I can hear either one if I am paying attention.

I hear LAUREL the whole time except for the furthest right spot where it sounds more like YERRI.

Same here. My wife mostly hears Yanny. I mostly hear Laurel, but can hear Yanny if I try. She can't hear laurel unless you use that NY times thing and slide it all the way to the laurel side.

It's odd, when I first heard it yesterday morning, all I could hear was "yanny".  And then I was listening to a program on Sirius XM and the host of the show brought it up.  He and the co-host both admitted that they heard "yanny" as well, but then he played the clip and it was "laurel".  The conspiracy theory was that it was going back to a site where it was randomly playing one or the other.

Yeah, my fault for thinking this should be on a CBS national news program as 'news'.

We did this in the house last night.  3 people heard yanny, 2 people heard laurel.  I heard yanny but could hear laurel with the pitch changed.

ETA:  I just played with the NYT slider thing.  If I move it back and forth from end to end slowly I always hear yanny, but if I swing it quickly from one end to the other I hear yanny and laurel.  That is fecked up.

Observation. If you start on the Laurel side and slide to the Yanny side, it sounds pretty much like Laurel. And vice versa.

It’s “Yanny,” though some psychopaths apparently hear “laurel.”
