Look Out, Rural King.

Around San Diego County, a hot, salty, buttered controversy has popped up.

Should hardware stores offer free bags of freshly popped popcorn?

While that may look like a warm, welcoming treat, free popcorn is a threat to public health — or so argue county officials. Last month, health inspectors raided La Jolla’s Meanley & Son Hardware, warning that its old-fashioned red popcorn machine is a germy outlaw.

Statists ruining everything.

Maybe they just need a more modern machine? Or do we think movie theaters are next?

Movie theaters probably are more likely to have 3 basin sinks

Yeah I see. Seems like an area where a compromise could be found, if only it wasn't the government. They are not generally known for compromises.

I wonder if there has ever been a case of someone getting ill and tracing it back to a popcorn machine?

Much like a report I saw once on the lemons that waitresses put into your water or iced tea. Apparently covered in germs. Now I think about it every time I see a glass of water with a lemon slice. However, I wonder if there’s ever been a documented case of someone getting sick from a lemon slice

I’m trying to think about popcorn vendors I see at events. I don’t think they have them. Definitely a hand wash station but not a 3 basin.

My Ace hardware store has popcorn going all the time.  I have never eaten popcorn from there but it smells lovely.

Why don't we just regulate everything enjoyable and we can all bask in the mayhem is causes.... just because people don't have enough self discipline to keep stuffing their face...

I haven't seen that in hardware stores around here.  Tire places, OTOH.

believe it or not, some Californians still know how to kick ass and take names, not just be big vaginas that echo. I should probably say that twice. *predator reference*. Northern ca wanted to separate from the crazies but lacked the voting turnout. Not to mention, what would have been called the state of Jefferson would never have been accepted. It would have given the north the ability to bargain for its own deals which would never fly. This state is basically run by four cities. Some of us are still country.

Or anywhere, really.

I can see being concerned that e. coli or other known pathogenic bacteria are found in these popcorn things in a place that can interact with the food at sub 140 F temps, but just saying, "we found germs" is insufficient.

When we were out there, I sold a car to someone who was decidedly "country".  $7,000 paid in cash.  Mostly $100 bills. Had to count it 3 times.  He and his girlfriend (it was going to be her car) looked and sounded like they were straight out of Kansas or Nebraska.

Kinda made me feel good to know that there was some "country culture" out there in California.
