I wouldnt say I taste the grains but I do stick my face in the bucket and take a huge whiff after crushing. I also do this before adding my hops to the boil. CUp them in my hands press against my face and inhale furiously. Then I sneeze my ass off, but its worth it.

I think you get a better feel for the grain and how it affects the taste of the wort if you know how it tastesbefore you add it to the mash.

I had someone really grill me on what makes beers different once. Thankfully we were in my home so downstairs to the grain stash we went. I had them taste Pale US 2-row, Pilsner, Munich, Marris Otter, rye, wheat, and crystal 60. After tasting each and explaining in what beer I would use that grain everything made a lot more sense.Good beer comes from good grain

Last weekend I spilled a little crystal on on the kitchen table as I was weighing. I didn't clean it up imediately and instead snacked on it for the rest of the brew day. At one point my wife asked me what I was eating, I told her crystal malt. She looks at me and goes "Weirdo". I say "it's good try it." She hesitantly tries a piece and says "not bad". Later a came in and she is munching on a handful. I go "Weirdo".

I think it's a good idea, especially if you're buying some grain you haven't used before. The LHBS usually gets a bit out for me whenever they have something new. And usually, I end up buying some........

When I get to the brewery nice and early to mill in for a batch and I haven't eaten breakfast- that batch is just a wee bit less alcoholic :rolf: Especially when it's malted wheat. I have eaten the equivalent to a bowl of cereal some mornings.

........ but i also taste my wort all the way through as well.

I just can't do it, tastes like malt syrup, well..... duhI guess if you do it enough you can count on what the final product will be. Now after fermentation has started, I will taste, occasionally, if I remember. Not much you can do at that point anyway except hope.

I am a muncher too. I have also talked with people and demonstrated the difference between beers because of the malts. Chocolate malt is always a good one to throw in there. After telling them there is no chocolate involved and that it kinda tasts like bittersweet chocolate, they get it.
