Had a dentist appointment today; on the way home, there's a brewpub, that makes consistently "ok, i guess" beer and good food. Desided to stop by for a flight and lunch. I was that guy, first customer to walk up to the bar.

Long story short, the lunch crowd rolls in. There's a very vocal gent, every but of 25, and orders the 9.2% NEIPA; which was very fresh and well made. Takes 2 sips and goes off on the bartender:


"This cant be an IPA! There's not not enough alcohol! And why is it cloudy! I've been brewing my own for two months now....."

I just wanted to interject, but resisted for the sake of entertainment. So have youse guys overheard any simular interactions at a local watering hole?

Agreed. Lagers are always pale in color, ales are always higher in alcohol, beer gets stronger as it ages so 12-year-old Budweiser "will get you fecked up!" and the list goes on and on. I don't interject unless someone asks me a question. I would prefer to watch the show and get more material.

Mmm, yeah and IPAs are a super-dark beer. Oh and bocks are made from the "stuff at the bottom of the barrel" and ales are always dark too. And... This one is really hoppy so it's going to get you drunk quicker. Man, there is a lot of material here.

this one blame on history. I've seen a lot of 1900 era ads where the establishment proudly serves ales and stouts.

Yeah, I've seen that. Also some old ads (and some trays I have in my bar area) that say "BEER AND ALE". My guess is that the suggestion is that "BEER" is lager and ALE is ale but it sounds redundant.

unless it was a NEIPA which is a pretty well known style at this point.

 

but in any event an experienced brewer wouldn't be acting like a d-bag like that.  I find most of us are a lot more down to earth.
