The coupler is just a tiny bit too high!

Not sure what to do now.

Also I noticed a tiny spot of corrosion in the bottom of the kettle. Hopefully a little star San or something will take care of it.

I don't have a grinder or anything. I may need to rethink my approach here.

This week I may just take the deadspace hit because I doubt I'll have time to figure something out by Friday.

I have a Dremel but I don't know if I have an appropriate cutting wheel.

Yes or use the dremel.  The Dremel will be faster I assume.

so I figured out something that will be slightly better.  I ordered an additional elbow like the one that came with it.  this will allow me to put an elbow on the bottom of the FB to be like a pickup and an elbow at the top to head out to the drain.  I will use the coupler I already bought to connect the two elbows.  already tested the fit and it will be about perfect.

Post some pics when you get it all finished. I'm having a hard time understanding how you will have enough room under the false bottom.

so does the couple just slid in the hole in the FB and self regulate the height?  Also will  you not lose the siphon once the liquid level gets below that of the elbow?  I may be visualizing this wrong.

This thread also makes me realize how many spare parts I have laying around!

The order port to pickup is:

1/2" male npt to 3/8" Barb
3/8" silicone tube
3/8" Barb elbow to 1/2" male npt
Female to female 1/2" npt coupler
False bottom exists here
Spacers/washers as needed
1/2" male not elbow to 3/8" Barb

To be clear that last elbow piece has threads sticking up through the false bottom.

The last part helped!

after a lot of futzing around and making little progress I realized the best way is to be able to tip the mash tun at the end of the run off.  so this is what I ended up with:

top of the FB:

bottom of the FB with short piece of tubing as a pickup near the edge of the tun:

installed in MT:

so all I need to do is tip the mash tun towards the drain and the pickup tube will do its job.  I tested this with water and there was well under a pint left in the MT after I let it drain completely.
