I'd have to find one that is pretty short overall.

probably 1" or less overall.

Copper or plastic and trimmed to fit? Or heat and stretch some hose over the threads shown on the bottom of the fb?

this is what is on the false bottom right now: https://www.concordk...d-elbow-304-s-s

I wonder if I could get one of those with a female npt and thread them together.  still might be too tall though.

how about a coupler?  those look pretty short.  one thing i'm wondering is if the end of the pickup is too large will it not suck up the wort?  unfortunately the tubing from the center of the false bottom to the side of the kettle is 3/8" and not 1/2" so it won't be pulling quite as hard as it otherwise would.  or maybe I'm wrong.  I'm not an expert on fluid dynamics :P

matt, does your false bottom have any kind of pickup tube on it? the underside of mine looks like this. I guess I figured there would be something there to go as close to the floor of the kettle as possible.

Yes mine is exactly like that. I just measured it and the pick-up is a little less than 3/8" from the bottom of the kettle. I don't see that as much of an issue. I fly sparge so I guess I'm not too worried about the deadspace.

So with no modification this thing has nearly half a gallon of dead space. Also I've never had to use so much Teflon tape to get something to seal up. After over a dozen attempts I think I got it though. Could just be my inexperience.

do I need to bother putting teflon tape on the coupler I'm adding to this?  I know it's supposed to be food safe but I still like to avoid this kind of stuff if possible.

Every time I thought I should use tape and didn't I ended up taking it apart and doing it right.

I'm just thinking it doesn't need to be super tight because it's not a part that can leak.

I wouldn't think so. You took that nut off and are replacing it with the coupler correct? Did you have to cut the coupler down?
