I'm guessing I won't lose more than a degree or two over the course of an hour on this mash. all I did was put an old comforter that I keep in the garage around the kettle. it's far from well insulated. I'll check when I hit 1 hour though to know for sure.

so I guess I'm going to find out if some amount of grain particulate in the boil is a big deal. I'm thinking not.
in any event with a FB like this do you need to varlauf a lot more than with a SS braid type setup?

runoff was a lot faster than I'm used to. I was concerned about that b/c of the small silicone hose inside the kettle but it doesn't seem to slow things down much.

I had a feeling there wouldn't be much room under the FB to do what you wanted. But glad you got something to work out.
As far as varlauf, I recirc during the mash (herms) so by the time I sparge its very clear. I have started to use a Brew Bag on top of the FB for the last couple batches mainly to aid in cleaning. But it has also really cleaned up what is going into the kettle.

They are easy to clean. Dump the grain and hose it off and let dry.

Exactly. I just pull the bag up and hang it to drain. Then as drez said, dump and hose off. I used to scoop out all the grain into buckets and then have to clean the tun. Just seems easier this way. They are easy to clean. Dump the grain and hose it off and let dry.

If you have one installed in the kettle it will get in the way.

So I just went to start getting things in order for a future Brew and the inside of this mash tun smelled a little like funky malt. It appears that the FB perhaps traps a little wort in the rolled edge that sits on the bottom of the kettle because it was kind of gooey around there. Last time I brewed was in the spring and I think I only did a rinse off the tun and fb. It looks like I probably need to soak the fb in oxiclean after every mash. Lesson learned I guess.
I steam clean mine as I am cleaning my brew kettle.

Fancy! I have a guy at work looking to maybe start brewing so I may be hitting you up for info on biab and maybe electric if the guy wants to go that way. I think I'm going to push most people towards biab to start because of the lower initial investment.

Interesting I haven't had that problem. But I usually stand mine on edge to dry after I rinse it.
That could be it. I rinsed it on place but maybe I should have unhooked the tubing and removed it for cleaning.
