Maybe I should start batch sparging again

I had about 1/4 of the batch in the kettle when I noticed the grainbed was not compacting and saw the mash had pulled away from the side of the tun.  Not good.

 

I topped off the mash with enough water to hit my volume, stirred, vorlaufed and drained it.  I lose 15% during the boil here.  OG was 1.049 and I was shooting for a FG of 1.051.

I tried Sparging for a time, i did not gain anything .(probably my fault).. went back to batch sparging..

if I could I would no sparge everything but my tun isn't quite big enough.
