at ritebrew I'm looking at $13.48 after shipping.  worth it or should I just pick up something from our friends at white labs or wyeast more locally for <$9?

I recall Ken likes that yeast a lot; Morty, is there anything else at ritebrew you need, to help make the shipping more palatable?

unfortunately no.  I'm well stocked on pretty much all grains and hops I'd need.

I know Morty lives nowhere near me, but to Cincinnati, a pack of Bayern ($8.25) should ship via USPS for $3.96, for a total of $12.21.

It gets much cheaper as you reuse it. Brew away.

so I like this yeast.  clean but has a certain character to it that I enjoy and really makes me think GERMAN!  I find bohemian lager (2124) is also a nice lager yeast but not quite as interesting as this yeast is.  my other favorite yeast is the ayinger yeast (WL833 German Bock).  that one has yet more character but sometimes you don't want THAT much extra yeast derived flavors going on and I think bayern lager is a good choice.

Agree with your description.  I really like Bayern, the Vienna I have on tap with it is a really nice beer.  I am planning to give it a go in a helles once the Czech pale lager is done.  WLP833 is another good one, I may be partial to it because it was one of the first lager strains I used.  838 on the other hand was just too malty for me.

I tried 833 b/c I had a few ayinger beers that BLEW MY MIND.  maybe I was in the right state of mind when I tried them.  but the yeast is def key in those beers.  I wouldn't want to use it for an IPL or anything but for classic lager styles it does some great things.

My first run with the Bayern's is strumming along perfectly since Monday's lift off. I hope to have a very drinkable Golden Lager. I'm going to see where it is in the ferment tonight/tomorrow in order to start increasing the temp to finish.
