We've had a bumpy couple of months on the IT front.  If you recall from the summer, we had some serious page loading issues that were making the site difficult to access.  We figured if we're going to get that fixed, let's upgrade the very obsolete board software at the same time.  That ended up being much more complicated than expected, and we ended up having to switch hosts.  And then we had two bouts of security warnings, requiring temporary migration to brews-bros.xyz, and then migrating back.  We don't have anyone in house that knows how to do this stuff, so I hired someone to do it for us.  Simon put in a ton of hours, and now things are finally running smoothly.

 

The bill has come in - $1,300 total, which is a lot, but there was a ton of work involved here.  Simon earned every penny.

We still haven't done the actual site upgrade.  We are going to let things sit or a bit and make sure it is stable, and then we want to get the upgrade done.  Any donations over the current need will be saved for that project.  I don't know any details, but I suspect mobile access will be improved by the upgrade.  We'll see.

It's a lot given that this site generates $0 in revenue.  But it's not a lot given the time he spent on it and the skills he's bringing to the table.  That's less than it really should have been too, he saved us money in a couple different ways.

As long as the site isn’t registered as a business and the PayPal account Scott is using is setup as a personal one then you can send it as friends/family. These are exempt from most of the fees.

I know I do lol. I can and do charge more commercial sites a higher rate but I prefer working on sites like this who couldn’t afford my commercial rate. Owners of such sites don't require a 2 hour meeting just to change a text colour from one shade of blue to a slightly darker shade, they don’t spam your phone at 4am with non-critical changes and you don’t have to deal with managers who act like they know what they are talking about when they can barely turn a computer on. You also get a sense they appreciate the work more than larger more commercial sites operators do.

I'm like an actor who takes a role in a Blockbuster just to allow them to be able to afford to take the role in a small indie passion project

I know. But if everyone just chipped in $5 x the amount of members on this chan, you would have plenty and then some.Hell you could take the Mrs out for a night on the town with the rest.
