I use a side pickup also, but I don't worry about the trub.  It just goes through my pump and into the fermenter.  A couple tests have found that beer fermented with trub in it is clearer and preferred by tasters.  It certainly doesn't hurt.

yes, my diptube is just a 1/2" copper tube, no screen or the like

I don't worry about it either anymore, just wanted to point out a cone can still form with The element. Just standard practice now to have the pump on when I add the last hops so I get a cone if I like it or not.

The heating element interferes with forming the stuff in the center.

Like Drez I have no issues forming a cone with a element.

It's crowded. I have the element, the chill coil, and the temp probe in there. Plus, I will have been pumping boiling wort through the system to sanitize for the last few minutes of the boil. That sucks hop matter down against the screens. If I use whole hops, they form a straining bed and the wort is clear as can be and fast flowing. With pellets the screen gets clogged and slows flow to a trickle.

I use one of those giant ss screen cylinders to keep the majority of my hop matter from clogging up my pickup tube but other than that I let the trub and small hop matter get to the fermentor.

How do you keep the hops from clogging stuff up?

I WP and get a cone, pull wort from the side and have no issues.  I did have one QD clog once but it was because it was a 90* one so I replaced that with a straight quick disconnect and have no had any issues.

Exactly what I do as well.

Funny, I had a buddy's IPA this past weekend made with those exact 3 hops. It was fantastic!

some aspect of my setup makes this not work so great. I've tried.

I am totally whirlpool impaired when it comes to collecting the trub in a center cone.  I use converted kegs for kettles and I've been told that for it to work you need a flat bottom on your kettle, not rounded like a keg.

mine is flat.  15 gal SS kettle.  it does have a drain with pickup tube on it which would disturb the swirling liquid a little so maybe that is the problem?  I really don't know.  I just find that my "cone" covers the whole bottom of the kettle so that pickup tube is covered in stuff that will clog it up.

Same here. I think he told me mid November. I know the Edelweiss was a later ship date.
