I was going to add this to another thread but I couldn't find it. Earlier in the year I made my Signature Ale and was going to use Omega West Coast ale yeast in it but that yeast was coming out of a blonde ale that did not turn out well... the yeast was funky. I didn't realize this until I was halfway through the brewday on the Signature Ale so I shifted midstream and used some S-04 on it. But I remember making this beer (which is about 30 IBUs but only one hop addition of Nugget at the start of the boil) with an English yeast in the past and the finish was a little too full and malty with the lower attenuating yeast. So as the Signature was boiling, I went and got another ounce of Nugget and just added it with a minute left to try to combat that problem. I had never used Nugget late in the boil like that. This was the beer that had a trace of diacetyl from the S-04 but the beer has actually been really nice to drink. I got a pound of Nugget hops from Yakima Valley for $5 and I could see using more of them late in this beer, a pale ale, etc. Very clean, no real citrus or other fruit to speak of, just plain, clean hoppy goodness.

As a bittering hop, they're fantastic. They're as clean as something like Magnum or Horizon without bringing citrus, wood, armpit, etc. to the beer. Very, very clean. Granted I only threw an ounce (late) in this beer primarily because I was shifting on-the-fly and wasn't sure if I should use the Nugget late at all but when I get either 1056 or OYL004 up and running in a couple of weeks I could envision a pale-colored pale ale with Nugget for bittering and then 3-4 ounces late for a nice hop punch. These are 14.6% and I would need to use these for more than bittering or they'll go downhill.

Have you used them late at all? I'm wondering if I would use them late and by themselves or maybe mix them with something else like Amarillo or Citra. The Amarillo and/or Citra would come through without question because the Nuggets are clean. I have to noodle with it a little bit but it's good to know I can use these as finishing hops because I only use about a half ounce for bittering.

I think I have but not heavily and not by themselves.
