Agree with a lot of that.  If I did not already have a 3-vessel system I would go a different direction if I was starting over.

I'm really attracted to a turn-key setup like the Grainfather. I have a three-tier setup, and I really enjoy the process of brewing on it. My system isn't perfect and can be improved upon, but I know it well and have fun with it when I have plenty of time to go about it. It's a ritual.

It would be nice to have something else for when I just want to crank out a batch with little drama, though. Plus, I can do it inside in the A/C.

Just saw this.

"We are sad to inform you that Larry’s Brewing Supply will be closing our doors after 26 years. As many of you know Larry’s has come into financial difficulty over the last several months, and after exhausting all our options we are forced to close.

Yep, that's my issue.  If you have to have a hoist to lift the bag, the ease is lost.  Since that's the reason to BIAB, I just can't see it.

BIAB simplifies the process on the whole regardless of batch size, so you don't lose all the ease of the process when the batches get larger but it certainly adds a layer of complexity to the process.  I would argue that going to 10 gallon batches adds a layer of complexity no matter what you do.  Once the amount of liquid you're working with goes beyond what you can easily move by hand then you've crossed a threshold of ease.

you can get away with gravity but it does usually take a little extra planning in how you set things up b/c my back can't take lifting that much hot liquid!

Right, it introduces complications no matter which way you slice it, there are many ways to get around them, whether it's pumps, hoists, or planning, but it ain't like cooking a pot of chili on the stove.

So I got the email today and went on there to see what was left. Their site must be getting hammered because it's acting really wonky. Right now I've got about $45 worth of Pilsner and Vienna malt in my cart but the thing is just spinning. I may not be able to finish my transaction but oh well.

I had some stuff in my cart when I first posted and realized Rite Brew was cheaper even after the sale price.

Got new figures last night.....

51% of shops have seen a sales decline, averaging 12%

slow down in openings

overall number of shops is 730, down about 10%

1% decline in beginner kits, but it was down 8% last year

affects both online and brick and mortar about equally

My contact information took about 5 minutes to appear and then under the payment section (where it reads your card information on file), a circle was just spinning there for like 20 minutes. I had $45 in grain and I could see that it was calculating $21+ in shipping and I thought, Why wouldn't I just go to a local place and screw it? The price for the grain wasn't THAT great and the shipping made it even worse so I just closed my window.

If local places shut down and big places like MW and NB were all that were left, that would be truly problematic because I'm not sure where I would go for supplies. At the moment I have three inconveniently located local suppliers and I sure hope it stays that way.

My local LHBS doesn't carry a huge selection but a few years ago the owner decided to convert half the shop to a grow supply place... That's most of his revenue now. It's the only one in town so I have a feeling he is doing alright :)

Back in business it seems. Merged with a another company. With promised same day shipping if orders placed before noon or shipping is free.
