I was drinking some of my dark lager last week when the keg ran out. I was expecting that and replaced it with a keg of red lager that was in the spare fridge conditioning for about a month. I put the red lager in the draft fridge and took a sample. Meh. Tasted a little weak and I thought I detected diacetyl which would be rare for me. I either switched to another beer or just stopped for the day and then tried more of the red lager a few days later and it tasted great. I had some last night and it was also great. I had a few glasses while making dinner and then grabbed one more glass while I was having dinner and thought [for a second] that I detected diacetyl again. Finished the beer after dinner and it was fine. So what's going on? Other things that I'm drinking and/or eating are making me imagine that there is diacetyl or bringing out the diacetyl? I've had one beer impact the flavor of another beer so that's understandable but this particular beer is making me wonder.

Maybe you're moderately blind to diacetyl?  Do you get the slick mouthfeel?

I'm telling our comptroller of redundancy! :P

No, no slick mouthfeel at all. Chils had started a Pilsner Urquell thread awhile back and we were talking about how noticeable the diacetyl can be in that beer. The last few times I've had it I have tasted some pretty serious diacetyl so I feel like I can pick it up. Very weird. The first day I tasted this red lager I thought I might have to dump it. The next time I had it I drank about six pints of it. WEIRD.

I can always tell diacetyl from the mouthfeel.  If you're not getting it, are you sure it's diacetyl?
